Search for Adam Cruickshank
« on: Saturday 18 January 20 17:22 GMT (UK) »
Adam Cruickshank was born 1885 Aberdeen & died 1943 Isle of Sheppey, Kent. He married Maud Hopkins 18/6/1910 at St Paul's Church, Sheerness, Kent. On the Wedding Certificate it states Adam's Father was David Cruickshank, Occupation Iron Moulder. I would be grateful for any help in finding Adam's family & how he ended up in Kent.

Hi Ellenmai

The best place to start your searches would be on Scotlands People www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/advanced-search  Unfortunately, they are currently undergoing maintenance until Tuesday 21.

You have Adam's birth place and year. You will be able to look online at his birth registration. SP is pay to view but costs are very reasonable.  This will let you confirm his correct birth dates and parents' details.

Was Adam in the Royal Navy? There are records for an Adam Cruickshank who served in the RN till 1921. Birth date is given as 3 December 1885 Aberdeen.

Have you seen his RN service papers? Very detailed. He looks to have enlisted on 4 Aug 1901.

An occupation of Messeger/message boy I think shows for him (at the time he enlisted?).

Would be good to start with his birth cert I think. Given how young his life started, there may be errors in his later details such as father's name? What occupation, if any, did he give for his father on his marriage cert in 1910? (You mentioned above he showed as an iron moulder). Father showing as alive or deceased?

Not sure on 1891 but there is this in 1901:

Jessie Smith 50
Harietta I Mathieson 52
Adam Cruickshank 14 boarder jute spinner b. Aberdeen
Robert B Scott 9 Months boarder b. Aberdeen

Address: 2 Causey Place St Nicholas, Aberdeen

You can look for him on the various Scottish censuses

You will find him in Kent on the 1939 register.  It's only available via subscription sites and Rootschat does not allow details to be published here.

2 children with them - entries open so are deceased.  The other son born 1915 can also be found in Kent

Nor can I  :-\

There is this David in 1881 www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:KMVW-M9V with a relevant occupation. This David's birth details here maybe www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:FQP5-Q6X

I cannot see this David in 1891 and 1901. Could he have died? We really need Scotlands People to be back up and running don't we!
