My head is tired now! Long day tomorrow for me so have to stop.

Trying to get my head around Mary Cruickshank, domestic servant and mother of Adam.

Adam was born at 6 Gerrard Street in 1885.

On the 1885 Valuation Rolls, the property shows as multi occupancy and a John Cruickshank, labourer, is one of the listed tenants.

Jessie Cruickshanks and husband David Smith both gave 6 Gerrard Street as their residence when they married in 1878 (Jessie's age consistent with a 1850 birth. Father Alexander, labourer and mother Ann Duncan. Neither marked up as deceased. An Alexander Cruickshank was witness to the marriage. Can't see a marriage or children for this couple so far).

And this is as far as I have got for tonight.

I can't help thinking that Mary Cruickshank was related to Jessie in some way - sister or cousin perhaps?

To make things even more confusing, the Alexander Cruickshank who was the father of the Jessie and Christian Cruickshank baptised in Inverurie in 1853 appears to have married three times - and all his wives were called Ann - Thomson, Bisset and Booth... He clearly had a thing for Anns...

So, out of curiosity, I had a look at the baptism record for Jessie Cruickshank, baptised 1853 Inverurie - and guess what, she was actually born on 13 Nov 1850, so not a twin at all, but just baptised on the same day as her younger sister, Christian, who was born in 1853  ::) Her parents didn't marry til 1853, so presumably that was why she wasn't presented for baptism before then... ahem...

The birth certificate referred to here - son of Mary Cruickshank and father later named as George Cruickshank, Baker - actually states Adam was born 2nd. December 1886, registered by mother on the 16th.

Jessie Smith certainly seems to have specialised in taking in illegitimate children. As well as Adam Cruickshank, both Harrietta Isobel Mathieson and Robert Burness Scott were also illegitimate.

I wonder if they were related to the Cruickshanks in some way? I’ve come across the name Burness before - I think one of George Cruikshank and Elspet Taylor’s daughters married a Burness...

Annette, thank you for the correction  ;) Looks like Adam made himself a year and a day older throughout his life!

Ruth, there does seem to be lots of threads around these people for sure.

The address 6 Gerrard Street certainly connects with them and Adam's birth. Thinking of Mary Cruickshank and mother of Adam. With George, the baker, being born in 1860, one would think Mary would have been near his age range likely.

George, the baker, his father was also George from what we have. The Adam name connects to Mary's side perhaps?

Just got back ready to get stuck into SP but delighted to see everyone has been beavering away. I haven't a subscription to SP as this is the first time I have had to research a Scottish person & was hoping to get the info with some credits. So am delighted in the kindness shown from fellow members of Rootschat who do have subscriptions. I will have to spend some time sorting all the facts out now & perhaps do a recap later. My money was on Jessie being Adam's Mum, so Mary Cruickshank came as a surprise & what a coincidence his Father George was a Cruickshank too  ???
Thanks again to Monica, Ruth & Annette  ;D

Nobody has - SP doesn't offer the option of a subscription.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thanks for putting me in the picture of SP not having a subscription facility Forfarian, as I haven't researched anyone from Scotland before.
All the more reason for me to thank Monica, Ruth & Annette for using their credits to help me find Adam's family, it is so kind of you all & for all the time you spent researching  ;D
