Is it possible to find out where the Suffolk yeomanry were through WW1?
« on: Wednesday 22 January 20 18:21 GMT (UK) »
My great grandfather Percy Langley was a 2nd lietentant in the suffolk yeomanry from 8/12/1917. Previously he was a warrant officer (class 2) in the cheshire yeomanry.
He kept a diary of sorts of his loactions in the suffolk yomanry but its hard to read in places. I was wondering if there is anywhere that woud detail where they were stationed to cross reference???

Here is what I have from the diary:
Beni-Salama, Egypt March 1916
Minia (Minya), Egypt April 1916
Sidi-Bishr, Egypt May 1916
Shusha (Shousha), Egypt June 1916
Samalut, Egypt July 1916
Baharieh (Bahariya?) August 1916
Alamien (El-Alamien?) November 1916
Helmieh (Helmieh Camp, Cairo?) February 1917
Gaza – April 1917 (Possibly in the second battle of Gaza 17 – 19 April).
Tel-El-Jamia May 1917
Mansura Ridge, Gaza June/July 1917
Regents Park (London?) August 1917
St James Park (London?) September
Zietoun (Zeitoun Camp, Egypt?) November 1917
Ramallah (Modern day Palestine) Xmas 1917
Biet-Sira (Beit Sira - Modern day Palestine)   Jan/Feb 1918?
Yeboud? March 1918?
Alexandria, Egypt April 1918?

La Bell – T…… May 1918

Kantara, Egypt (El Qantara, Egypt) 28-8-1?
Langley, Broughton, Taylor, Broad, Cooper, Owen, Bennion, Yorke, Knox, Norcup, Holland, Brookes, White, Davies, Huntbach, Bowler, Barnett.

Take a look at The Long Long Trail.
Relevant page here:

He would have been in the 1/1st Battalion, Suffolk Yeomanry.
From January 1917, he would have been with the 15th (Suffolk Yeomanry) Battalion of the Suffolk Regiment and the 74th (Yeomanry) Division.

Details here:

Prior to Jan 1917 there are two war diaries for the Suffolk Yeomanry here covering up to Dec 1916:

https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_aq=WO%2095&_ep=suffolk%20yeomanry&_dss=range&_ro=any&_st=adv

To be clear - was he in the Suffolk Yeomanry on the dates you quote in 1916 or was he commissioned from the Cheshire Yeomanry in Dec 1917 (the London Gazette only says "Yeo Bn).

So presumably the 1916 and 1917 dates to Dec 1917 relate to where the Cheshire Yeomanry was and thus the Suffolk Yeomanry diaries are not of immediate interest?

The Suffolk’s from dec 1917 certainly are. I’ve just read that both the Cheshire’s and the Suffolk’s were part of the 74th (yeomanry) division, so presumably they’d be doing the same thing anyway?

Then following up KGarrad's info, 15 Suffolk 's diaries:

 https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C4557831 and
https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7355628

(To be clear, the diaries I cited earlier are the relevant Cheshire diaries).

Tom,

An old thread, but hopefully one that is still of interest.

It appears that your great grandfather Percy Langley, served with my grandfather, Thomas Minshall. I ran a blog during the WW1 centenary years documenting some of my grandfathers service. Interestingly, they both served with Cheshire Yeomanry, who amalgamated with Shropshire Yeomanry to form 10th (Shropshire & Cheshire Yeomanry) Bn. King's Shropshire Light Infantry. Both were then commissioned on the same date and transferred to 15th (Suffolk Yeomanry) Bn. Suffolk Regiment.

Have a look at the following page for starters, but also browse the blog contents page for information particularly on their home service 1914-1916 - https://fwwjournal.blogspot.com/2017/10/cadet-class-cairo.html

Do you have a picture of Percy from the First World War?
