Subject: John Nelson Scott Royal Manx Fencibles

Hello Ms Frances Coakley. My name is David Towns and I'm doing research on a Sealer John N Scott  in Tasmanian Waters from 1805 on wards. I noticed the same name Published in the,
Isle of Man Family History Society Journal Vol 1 No 3 1979   Another Manx Link with Trafalgar [Lewis B.  Reeves]

I am trying to rule in or out if they are the same man or just see the same name. The John N Scott I'm looking at could read and write and he left a Diary which is a rare skill in the sealing trade. The first Voyage After arriving in Australian is in the Ship John  on the tenth of November 1805. He most likely travelled on a ship called the Ceres or Honduras Packet that left Britain mid 1804 sailing to Bass Strait to commence sealing before both ships arrived in Sydney. Both Ship's returned to Britain, the last mention I've found online for John Nelson Scott in Britain is the 26/03/1804 in the Sun News paper. If you cold help me by finding a reference after 10th November 1805 for John Nelson Scott son of Patrick Scott so I can rule him in or out as the same man. I can't find any marriage, baptisms of Children or death record for John Nelson Scott only his birth recorded on 28th December 1773 Isle of Man.
Thanking you in advance David Towns.

Hello David and welcome to RootsChat.

I'm not sure that this is much help for you, but there are a few mention of John Nelson SCOTT, physician/surgeon - 2nd regiment Royal Manx Fencibles, though I can't see any parish records for him - others on here may have access to some?

- on his appointment as surgeon - the Oracle, Monday,  Mar. 28, 1796

- described as "physician in the Isle of Mann and Surgeon to the Second Regiment of Royal Manx Fencibles" in "Annals of medicine, for the year 1796. Exhibiting a concise view of the latest and most important discoveries in medicine and medical philosophy." By Andrew Duncan, Sen. M. D. and Andrew Duncan, Jun. M. D. Fellows of the Royal college of Physicians, Edinburgh. Vol. I published in 1799

- noted as now serving in Ireland: "A tour through the island of Mann, in 1797 and 1798; Comprising Sketches Of Its Ancient And Modern History, Constitution, Laws, Commerce, Agriculture, Fishery, &C. Including Whatever IS Remarkable In Each Parish, Its Population, Inscriptions, Registers, &C." By John Feltham. Published 1798

"We understand that Dr. NELSON SCOTT, of Douglas, in the Isle of Man, was lately admitted a Member of the Corporation of Surgeons in London."
Sun, Friday,  Mar. 1, 1799

- "Colonel Lord HENRY MURRAY and the Officers of the Second Royal Manx Fencibles, have presented their late surgeon, Dr Nelson SCOTT, with a piece of plate expressive of their esteem and regard."
Sun, Friday,  Mar. 22, 1799
