Edward Grubb marriage Sible Hedingham 1733
« on: Saturday 25 January 20 13:33 GMT (UK) »
Hi
If anyone has access to the marriage register of Sible Hedingham for 1733 could they do a quick look up for me please?

Edward Grubb married Susanna Robinson 7 Oct 1733, I was wondering if he was a bachelor or widower please?

Thanks
Helen

The register doesn't mention whether either were single or widowed. Looking at other marriages recorded by same clerk on same page, none were recorded as bachelor or spinster, but some were recorded as widow or widower. So he may have only recorded a status for those who were widowed. A bit of an assumption though.

His name is spelt Grub (with one b) in the register

Hi Lizzie
thanks for that, it was only a long shot.

Do you have access to the baptism records for 1734 as well please? I am trying to find out more information about David and Edward Grub baptised there 15 Sep 1834 as sons of Edward and Margaret, specifically if the baptism shows any ages?

There's an Edward Grub bapt 15th Sept 1734 s/o Edward and Margaret. No age shown.
No David. But the E of Edward (the son) is faint - so it is possible a transcriber thought that the d was the first letter of the name and read it as David. And another transcriber read it as Edward so it appeared on an index as two people.

I can't find baptisms of any other children of Edward and Margaret, but several for Edward and Susan/nah starting with Henry  on 5 Oct 1735 - two years after marriage.
Have you found a marriage for an Edward Grub and a Margaret? If not, I wonder if Margaret was a mistake by the vicar. Quite often they wrote up registers some time after the event.

Hi Lizzie
thanks, I haven't been able to find a marriage between Edward and Margaret and wondered the same thing myself - were there any other baptisms that day? did the minister perhaps confuse two families and give them the wrong mothers names?

Unfortunately at this point in time I don't think we'll ever know!

None on the same day, but it is in a block of 6 baptisms covering a few weeks which from the ink  look like they could have all been recorded at the same time. There is another Margaret and a Susannah among the other five mothers. I've looked at the Susannah (surname Palmer). She seems correct - other children baptised to her and her husband Marmaduke Palmer.

Maybe your Susannah had a sister Margaret who the vicar confused her with

Thanks anyway for looking, guess this is insolvable at this moment in time!
I think I will tackle this problem from another angle.
Thanks again for your input
