John Saunders
« on: Tuesday 28 January 20 00:28 GMT (UK) »
Greetings.

In the course of my genealogy perambulations, I've come across a puzzle.

Somewhere/somewhen a John Saunders and his wife Ann had three (that I've found) children.
1. Penelope, bap South Molton 11 Jan 1749/50
2. Grace, bap South Molton  15 Nov 1752, buried South Molton 31 Jul 1755
3. Philippa Hele, bap 4 Nov 1756 South Molton, married John Quartly 8 Aug 1784 South Molton.

The marriage of John Saunders to Ann is proving somewhat difficult to find. Going by baptism dates, it's possible that the John/Ann marriage took place about 1747.

I've done the following:
Checked FindMyPast marriages both for Devon and for all records, Ancestry for everything in England, Familysearch including some records in the catalog. Also DFHS parishes that are not on FindMyPast, some are missing the dates that are useful.
John's will is maybe there, but there are too many to get an accurate handle on one. Of those I have been able to see (in Worthy's Wills), names don't match, and lots were destroyed.

A tree on Ancestry has him marrying an Ann Bate, but no proof. The middle name of Philippa may provide a clue, but it hasn't helped so far.

Does anyone have some ideas as to further records that can be looked for?

Best regards, Keith Jeffery

The marriage between John SAUNDERS of South Molton and Ann BATES also of South Molton took place at George Nympton in 1733. There's a baptism at Shirwell in 1738 for a John SAUNDERS son of John & Ann.

Thank you very much for that. Greatly appreciated.

A small question. Where did you find the baptism? FindMyPast have nothing for Shirwell in 1738 that I can see. Also, the BTs on Familysearch don't have 1738.....?

Doesn't help with a marriage, but there is a newspaper item mentioning John SAUNDERS of South Molton, "practitioner of the Law" to be discharged as an insolvent debtor in 1725.
The London Gazette, June 26, 1725

The 1738 Shirwell baptism is on FindMyPast - it's an indexed transcription.
