Hi Margaret,
I know all about her from her marriage to her death, I've got all the census returns.
Her husbands paternal line I can follow to 1693, his maternal line the Corbet/ts are so well documented that I can get back to 1020. It's this Chatwell line that's got me stumped.

At the risk of putting the cat amongst the pigeons, I think her surname when she married Christopher in 1825 is recorded incorrectly and not Chatwell at all.

I checked baptisms of their children 1839 to 1851 since they would appear on the GRO's own index which now shows mothers maiden name.   A dau. Rebecca birth Dec.1839 (bp.19/12/1839 - she died Mar.qtr.1840) shows mmn as Chatten, Christopher birth Mar.1841 (bp.31/1/1841) - mmn Chitwin, a son Enoch bp.4/2/1844 BUT wonder if name was changed as birth reg.Mar.1844 as James - mmn Chatwin, and Thomas birth Mar.1851 (bp.9/2/1851) - mmn Chatting!  (Couldn't find birth entry for Joseph bp.7/4/1847 on the GRO's index).

As you can see the surname would appear to be Chatwin or a variant thereof.   Not one of the birth entries has Elizabeth's maiden name as Chatwell.

That being so, there are 2 baptisms for you to choose from at Halesowen:

Betty (pet form of Elizabeth) Chatwin bp.14/7/1805, dau. of Charles and Elizabeth

Elizabeth Chatwin bp.16/3/1808, illegitimate dau. of Ann.

I feel absolutely sure that your Elizabeth was a Chatwin and not Chatwell at all and that a mistake was made when the marriage was recorded.    Both of them made their mark so wouldn't have known her name was written incorrectly.

Good work Annette :)

I looked at FreeREG for Wolverhampton Marriages 1820-1831;
Several Chat* and variants Marriages.

One was a Fielding Chatwin in 1824 to Mary Burrows
1851 Census he is born c 1803 Halesowen

Burials;
St John the Baptist, Halesowen, Worcestershire
CHARLES Chatwin 30 Apr 1848 age 81
ELIZABETH Chatwin 12 May 1836 age 66

Cant find anything for Ann the other potential Parent of Elizabeth

This may be Charles in 1841 Census;
Hales Owen, Shropshire
Charles Chatterson 70 Nailor
Mary Chatterson 25
Jane Chatterson   15

If you look on FreeREG the girls appear to have married as CHATWIN
MARY 19 Aug 1852 age 41, Father Charles a Nailor
JANE as Jane Chatwin White CHATWIN 27 Apr 1845 (she does not name a Father. Mary Chatwin a witness)

Something a little strange here though with Marys age or she had Jane very young;
1851 Census
Mary Chatwin 39 Widow Nailor
James Cocken 26 S in Law
Jane Cocken 26 Daug
Elizabeth Cocken 3
Sarah Cocken   1

1861 the Cockens and Whites are living next door to one another

1871 Mary White is Jane Cockins Aunt

Looking at family trees on Ancestry, to see if another 50+ people have got things wrong, and there is an Elizabeth Chatwin from Halesowen and surrounding districts born around 1805, marrying a William White in 30+ trees.  Possibly a bias to the 1808 one marrying Mr White, but either are claimed.

Added:
This family in Dudley in 1861, for elimination
William White   54
Elizabeth White   55  Halesowen
Elizabeth White   22
James White   19   mmn Chatwen
Edwd White   15  mmn Chatwin
Sarah White   2

Hi Annette, trish, chempat,
First of all thank you for your time and effort working on this.
I'm going to take some time to digest your findings. I've got so many names/dates swirling around in my head that I'm confusing myself  ;D

Spent the day trying to fathom this out.
I think most likely is that her name was Chetwin with a birth year between 1803 and 1805, given she married in 1825 and the ages she gives on the census returns.
Of the 2 baptisms in Halesowen I think the 1805 most likely but i wont discount the 1808 one completely.
Any thoughts on this?
A bonus has been the discovery of Rebecca who I didn't know about.

Thank you all
