I found the death on ancestry,
When I rang Stockton cemetery they had a Mary Ellen Smith died 1977 and not 1980,
I asked my sister if she had any information and she said she died in 70's

When I spoke to a lady at darlington borough council who has been helping me find Christopher Mary. I gave her the details from ancestry and informed me that I should ring Stockton cemetery.
To which they said they had a Mary Ellen Smith 1977.

Ah, I understand.

So you've confirmed that the Mary Ellen Smith in the death cert and died in 1980 - who is likely to be yours - isn't buried in Stockton cemetery.  You haven't got the certificate to see exactly where she died, and who notified the death?

And you haven't got Christopher's death certificate?  So as I said before, why not get that one, and see if it is the correct one, and the address on that.

Possibly Mary Ellen died elsewhere (living with one of the children, quite possibly?) but maybe was buried with her husband back in Darlington?

I would get both certificates

The Mary Ellen whose death was registered in Cleveland district in 1977, was born in 1878, so not yours

I would like to thankyou for all information received.
It's very hard finding out information. As I'm the youngest of 7, so I can only go on information from my older siblings.

One of the times, Mabel, where I think buying the certs is justified.

Re your not finding a Christopher Smith birth in 1890 anywhere, I wonder whether that's the correct year, despite the 1939.

On the marriage cert for him and Mary Ellen in 1921 he says he's 27, and a tree on Ancestry does have a possible sighting of him aged 7 in 1901 saying he was born in Coxhoe, Durham - father William as the marriage cert.

Again added, the marriage cert has witnesses the McCullaghs which suggests that the Lizzie McCullagh of the 1911 was Mary Ellen's mother.

When I received information about their baby that died I did wonder if both Christopher and Mary were in that unmarked grave in Darlington,
I bet yr job finding information for families is most interesting,

It was an unmarked grave?  How did you find it, was there any information about who else was in it?

And everyone here is an amateur researcher, this isn't our job - we do it out of interest (and nosiness to be honest)  ;D ;D ;D
