Thanks Ruskie, I realised belatedly I should have advised that the grandfather (with help if necessary) applies for his own record, apart from anything else, it won't cost anything!

Are you looking for the passport as proof of date of birth, or identity? Is that a requirement for the application? Would a birth certificate suffice, if it is easier to find (or repurchase)?

Yes, the application does ask for a passport, but I’ve spoken to my aunt who looks after my grandparents and she has their passports. Fingers crossed we can get hold of a copy of his service record.
