Thomas Moon married 1820
« on: Wednesday 05 February 20 22:05 GMT (UK) »
Here is an interesting one to ponder.

The Dowally OPR has the following entry:

Thomas Moon, mealmiller Balleyoukan was lawfully married at Kirkmichael the 13th November 1820.

However there is no name of the bride, no mention on ScotlandsPeople for either Dowally or Kirkmichael.  No obvious children and not mentioned in 1841 census nor 1851 census.

If you have no wife's name and no children's names - what other info do you have that makes you sure he is not on the 1841?

He may not have been from Perth but perhaps his wife was.  He may be living in another county by 1841 or could have died

There is an 1841 entry for a Thomas & Helen Moon living in Midlothian.  Their children are shown as b Midlothian but Thomas & Helen are just shown as b Scotland.  Have you already ruled them out as the 1851 shows Helen was b Dunblane  Perth

I suggest directing this to Scotland's People, because if this is an entry in the OPR that isn't in their index they will want to correct it, and also there could be other entries missing from the index if a whole page was missed by the indexers.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

In the 1851 census (a transcription) in Fowlis Easter there is a Thomas Moon, 49, blacksmith, born Longforgan, Perthshire with wife Elspet, 48, born Fowlis Easter, and six children. This is a bit closer to Dowally/Kirkmichael than Midlothian, but his occupation is wrong. They were in Liff in 1841 and in Fowlis Easter in 1861 and 1871, but not in 1881. However there is a marriage of Thomas Moon to Elspet Cochrane in Liff etc in 1829.

The one in Midlothian in 1841 is a tailor. Helen was a widow in 1851, and there is a death of Thomas Moon, aged 52 in St Cuthbert's in 1850.

Possible maybe, as mentioned.

1841 St Cuthbert’s, Midlothian – Moon family, on freereg.

In 1851 still in St Cuthbert’s Helen is a widow age 57 born Dunblane, only William age 19 is with her. Sadly no birth/baptism records on SP?

THOMAS MOON   Died    52   25/05/1850   St Cuthbert'

Thanks to both of you, we'll see what comes up but the omission from the databases is an oddity.  It's not the case that the whole page of the OPR has been missed as we picked it up when we were checking the original for George Moon in Guay which is on the same page.  ScotlandsPeople are probably sick of us - we found a Jill Moon on their database for the early 1700s who is almost certain to be Sesil (i.e. Cecil or Cecilia), granted that the writing was blotched and difficult to decipher.  Then we found a Morgon Moon in Dysart, Fife who should be Mary Ann (she died in Dysart a couple of years later with the same parents of Moon and Goodsir).

This Thomas Moon is almost certainly the son of John Moon and Janet Wallace who married in Edinburgh, 27th March 1782, but returned to Balyoukan to produce a family of half a dozen children including Thomas, 24th June 1796.

Moons in this area are extremely rare and probably came south from Blair Atholl or Moulin.

We have checked the Minister of Moulin's 1820 census which includes Balyoukan but it reveals nothing.  Likewise the 1806 Moulin census.

The Thomas MOON AND Elspeth COCHRANE you noted, Thomas was born 6th Dec 1801 at Longforgan and Elspeth 30th Jan 1803 at Fowlis Easter. They married 3rd MAY 1829 at Liff Benvie & Invergowrie and had 4 sons and 2 daughters.
Thomas died 21st July 1877 at Birkill Fens and Elspeth died 12th Dec 1884 at Doune Kilmadock.
Whether this is the family for the original question I have no idea, but it fills out the Thomas you mentioned
Cheers

Iain R Thomson's book "The Long Horizon!" mentions a servant of the Lovat's, James Moon, "Jimmy the Moon!" who was responsible for lighting the lamps for many years at Beaufort Castle.
A very good read whatever, pub' by Birlinn.
