Birth Certificate 1898
« on: Thursday 06 February 20 08:20 GMT (UK) »
Hi All,

My great grandfather, Joseph Henry Batten was born 1898 in Durban. We all now live in the UK. I wondered how one goes about ordering a birth certificate? I’ve been on the home affairs website and it’s all very confusing and seems like it’s set up for living people to order their own certificates. I’ve also tried contacting the SA embassy/consulate in London, but no response.

Any advice or help would be gratefully appreciated.

MJ

Hi MJ,
Have you seen his father's probate documents on familysearch.org? Info includes your John's DOB and place of birth, mother's name and place of marriage.
Is that the info you are looking for?

Hi Christine,

Thank you. Yes I have the complete estate file. I’ve traced his family back, I’d just like a copy of his Birth Cert. but seems to be so hard to contact anybody to obtain one.

I Googled obtaining south african birth certificates and this came up. I am not sure how good they are. It might pay you to research them looking for reviews https://unabridgedbirthcertificates.com/unabridged-birth-certificate/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIvqP-v4jE5wIVA5KPCh0aHwJuEAAYASAAEgLpZPD_BwE

You could try contacting the Archives in Pietermaritzburg , the relevant birth registers for that time will be there - you will be able to get a copy of the page.  This would be an easier option then getting it from Home affairs if you don't need it for legal purposes.
