Breakwater Convict Station, Cape Town
« on: Friday 07 February 20 23:42 GMT (UK) »
Hello!

I have recently found a death record of Sidney Thomas Ditcham who died at the Breakwater Convict Station in 1895 and I wondered if I could find out online why he was put in there? He was admitted to Kew Asylum in Australia in 1887 where he struggled with 'voices' and became violent so I'm wondering if this happened again in SA? Any info on him would be great.

Thanks in advance

I see that his death notice says that he was a clerk and storekeeper which would suggest that he perhaps worked there, and was not an inmate.

There is a fascinated thesis by H. Deacon online regarding Breakwater which you might find interesting. I found it by googling Breakwater Convict Station+Cape Town.

I assume that you already have Sidney's "information of a death" : https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:939Z-59YL-2?i=855&cc=1779109

But, it is his actual "death notice" that mentions that he was a "Convict at time of death":
