Patrick Woods Publican Keady
« on: Saturday 08 February 20 10:04 GMT (UK) »
I have found d out my G G Grandfather Patrick Woods ran a pub / grocer at 12 Barrack Street Keady
I cannot find Barrack Street anywhere   I have searched in old free Directories but its lists his name and the address .

I would love to find ot the name of this pub and where in Keady it would have been.

Both he and his wife.died very young and it took nearly 10 years  for my  g grandfather to inherit despite being of full age.   It sounds like there was a dispute

Have a look at https://apps.spatialni.gov.uk/PRONIApplication/
Put Keady in the search bar.

I don't see a Barrack Street, but you don't give any dates.  :-\

Is this the correct Patrick Woods?
Letters of Administration of the personal estate of Patrick Woods late of Keady County Armagh Publican who died 6 July 1877 at same place were granted [30 Mar.1893] at Armagh to James Woods of Keady Publican the Son. Effects £56 6s.
There is no indication that there was any sort of dispute from this Will Extract. Patrick Woods didn't leave a Will but in 1893 his son James applied and was granted administration of Patrick's estate. This does not mean that son James inherited the pub or anything else. If there is no valid Will then the law designates who inherits (spouse, children, parents, etc. depending on the nearest relatives). Since it was just over £50 perhaps no one bothered sorting anything out until some other event meant this needed to do done. Did anyone in the family die in or before 1893 that could have caused this? (Patrick's widow for example)

There is a Will online for this man- see https://apps.proni.gov.uk/WillsCalendar_IE/WillsSearch.aspx
The Will (with one Codicil) of Owen Woods formerly of Keady and late of Lagan both County Armagh Retired Publican who died 16 November 1895 at Lagan was proved at Armagh by Lawrence M'Shane and Patrick Waters both of Keady Merchants the Executors.
Note: Owen Woods' premises was in Bridge St., Keady

Have you searched through the Valuation Revision Books yet? you should be able to find the location from there. I suspect 'Barrack Street' would be near the police barracks in Keady.

Since James Woods returned to Ireland around 1894 then that could well be the reason he applied to administer his father Patrick's estate in 1893.

Sorry I forgot the dates we are talking about the 1870s or earlier.  I have found him in directors there from the 1860s and 1870s  I

That is the very man. I  can find him in 12 Barrack Street from 1850 up until his death in 1877 (Death Cert states 187i8)

Most of the children who ranged from teenagers to adults went to America  separately  even the 14 year old travelled on their own.  Some I cant trace.

There was.always a family rumour that there was an argument over a will about.land.  but.appeats to be a pub and you know what family rumours are like.

The James Woods in the will is my G Grrandfather.  Like the rest of his family he went to New York but came back  when his children were small to Dundalk. Where he ran a fruit and veg stall and shop for decades.

It is interesting that he applied in 1893.  He.works as a cab driver in New york at that time and things were not going well.  There was a strike and he lost his home   I am thinking he applied for funds so he could use the money to pay for his family to return to Ireland

Thank you everyone for your help      does anyone know where the old police station would have been in Keady ?

Letters of Administration granted in March 1893 but not sure from extract how long before the actual application would have been.

Haven't been able to get a street address for the barracks but perhaps someone with local knowledge will have an idea. There are pictures of the barracks on this Facebook page- apparently 'beside the mart' [market]

The Corner House pub is on the corner of Market St. (that was Woods at a time) and Owen Woods had (1895) pub on Bridge St. which is in same general area as the diamond and new library.

if you search the national archives of Ireland, click on census, browse census for 1901, then click Armagh, then Keady town there is a Thomas Woods age 59 a merchant & publician living in house 5 Bridge St.  I f you look further down to house 19 there is a property with multiple occupants only identified by initials, could this be the Barracks?
No woods family in Bridge st in 1911 census but there is still a property with multiple occupants ,all male and from all areas of Ireland.
