Tracing ancesters
« on: Sunday 21 August 05 10:16 BST (UK) »
I am trying to trace my ancestry but am having trouble as am in australia.sofar have info about names but getting proof and certification. Also cant find correct details on military service.
Biggest problem is stories about their history and what appears as census details dont add up esp military service.
If anyone in the Kent district can help please contact.
Thanks all pblaws.

We don't have to be in the Kent district to help, you'll find many people will try on here and believe me, many of us even in England, don't even leave our computer to do our research, so it is possible.

Give us something to start with, do you have a definite birth/marriage which will take your people into the 1901 census? and where, or even if they aren't that old.  Give some information about who was in the military service, some people have become experts at that line of research.  You'll get some help on here if you give information.

Why not post what family you know about on the Kent county messageboard and take it from there.

Good luck, Mary

Hi PB

A warm welcome to RootsChat!  ;)

As Mary says, the best thing for you to do is to post some specific query with as much detail as possible and I'm sure you will be pleasantly surprised with the response you get.

Good luck and best wishes

So this I presume is your grandfather on the 1901 census, because when I looked on FreeBMD there was a surprisingly large number of John William Tomlinson births registered between 1892 and 1894, but this is the only one on the census of about the right birth date born in the Medway area. The family also seems to have all the other elements you mentioned

1901 RG 727 folio 130
89 Mount Rd Chatham  Kent
John W Tomlinson 36  Little Chester, Derbyshire,  Head  Married  Sapper Royal Engineers
Beatrice Sarah Tomlinson 33 Chatham, Kent, Wife  Married
John W Tomlinson 7 Chatham, Kent, Son
Beatrice M Tomlinson 6 Rochester, Kent, Daughter
Edith A Tomlinson 5 Kedleston, Derbyshire,  Daughter
Francis Ellen Tomlinson 2  Kedleston, Derbyshire, Daughter

Regards
Valda

This is the rest of the direct male line

1891 census RG12 656 folio 58
4 Almon Place St Nicholas Rochester  Kent
Tomlinson, John William 27 Little Chesterford, Derbyshire, Head  Married Steam enginer maker fitter
Tomlinson, Beatrice Sarah 24 Chatham, Kent, Wife  Married

From FreeBMD their marriage reference
Brown, Beatrice Sarah 1890 December Marriages Medway
Tomlinson, John William 1890 December Marriages Medway
Volume 2a page 1031

Then despite the age change, having eliminated the other John Tomlinsons in Derbyshire this I think is him in 1881

1881 census RG11 3406 folio 133
6 Evans Buildings, Little Chester, Derbyshire, England
Jabez Tomlinson 36 City Road, Derbyshire, Head Married Sawyer
Sarah Tomlinson 37 Little Chester, Derbyshire, Wife
Mary A. Tomlinson 13  Little Chester, Derbyshire, Daughter  Factory hand
John W. Tomlinson 11 Little Chester, Derbyshire, Son  Factory hand
Rebecca Tomlinson 6 Little Chester, Derbyshire, Daughter

And if it is this is the family on the next two censuses

1871 census RG10 3562 folio 73
Little Chester  Derbyshire
John Calendine  Head  Not residing in the house
Jabez Tomlinson 27 Derby, Derbyshire, Son-in-law married Woodcutter
Sarah Tomlinson 27 Little Chester, Derbyshire, Daughter
Eliza Calladine 20  Little Chester, Derbyshire,Daughter  Cotton Mill Hand
Mary A Tomlinson 3  Little Chester, Derbyshire, Grandchild
John W Tomlinson 1 Little Chester, Derbyshire, Grandchild

From FreeBMD
CALLADINE, Sarah 1867 June Marriages Derby
TOMLINSON, Jabez 1867 June Marriages Derby
Volume 7b page 640

1861 census RG9 2495 folio 46
15 City Road Derby
Jabez Tomlinson 42 Breedon, Leicestershire, Head married Wood Sawyer
Rebecca Tomlinson 37 Shoreharm, Kent, Wife  Married
Jabez Tomlinson 16 Derby, Derbyshire, Son  Silk Weaver
Eliza Tomlinson 14 Derby, Derbyshire, Daughter  Silk Weaver
Harriet Tomlinson 12 Derby, Derbyshire, Daughter Silk Weaver
Laza Tomlinson 10 Derby, Derbyshire, Daughter
Rebecca Tomlinson 8 Derby, Derbyshire, Daughter
Ann Tomlinson 6 Derby, Derbyshire, Daughter
William Tomlinson Under 4 mths Derby, Derbyshire, Son

I was hoping the indexer would make a better job of the daughter's name aged 10, than I could make out (don't know why since they have made mistakes throughout this entry, which I've corrected for the page itself). Nothing on FreeBMD to help me out either, so may be someone else can have a look at the  actual entry and suggest what it might be.

No marriage for Jabez and Rebecca on FreeBMD so you'll have to look on 1837 online for it to get their father's names from the marriage certificate. You might also want to put a request on the Derbyshire board for a look up on the 1851 census for the family in Derby.

Regards
Valda
