Ley family
« on: Sunday 21 August 05 11:31 BST (UK) »
I am seeking any information regarding the family of Mary Ann Ley who I believe was born around 1858 in Devon, the daughter of Edwin Ley.

All I know about her so far is that she married Henry Earl 18 April 1880 in Portman Square, Middlesex and had several children born in Marylebone.

This is great - thanks very much.

Now, the next questions are obviously where do Jane Ley and Sarah J Ley fit in?????

Can anyone help with this?

1841 Census ........Only creates more questions I am afraid particularly with relationships not being listed in 1841 census...would wonder if something may have happened to his parents

Mary Ann Ley was my great grandfather (Charles Parkin Ley) sister.  My grandmother was christened Lottie Tugela Ley in 1900.  I was always told that the "Tugela" came from the name of a river her uncle was crossing about the time of her birth during the Boer War.  I believe that this uncle was probably Edwin Ley.  Any info you may have would be greatly appreciated.

Mary Ann Ley is my 2nd gt grandmother.  She had a brother John Jose who was born in Barnstaple around 1857.  I was not aware that they had a sibling named Charles although their father Edwin, who was a painter, had a brother with this name born about 1824.

Mary Ann's mother's first name was Elizabeth but I do not know her second name. Would you have any info on this?

Hope this helps - I've only been at this 6 to 8 weeks!

Parents:-

Edwin Ley - born abt 1828
Elizabeth Ley Nee PARKIN - born abt 1831

Children:-

Mary Ann born abt 1855 (married Henry Earl in 1880.  Children I know of are:- Annie born 1886, Frederick born 1891, Stephen born 1892, Lucy Jane born 1894 and John Charles born 1899).
John Jone born abt 1857 (I believe married Esther Bowler in Hampstead, London in Q1 of 1898)
Elizabeth Jane born abt 1862 (no further knowledge)
Edwin born abt 1864 - I believed joined the army - no further knowledge yet
William born abt 1867 - no further knowledge yet
Charles Parkin born 9th May 1868 married Mary Eleanor Wollacott (or Woollacott) on 30th March 1889 in Braunton Parish Church.  They had three children.  Mary Eleanor born 1890, Charles Parkin born 1898, and my grandmother Lottie Tugela 3 March 1900, and died 7 March 1977.  She married Edgar William Cruse on Christmas Day 1924 in West Buckland Parish Church.  Edgar died on 4th July 1977.  they had one daughter Mary Georgine on 8 June 1926, who was my mother.  She died on 20 March 1977 of breast cancer, 13 days after her mother.
James Henry Ley born abt 1871. - no further knowledge yet.

This is the best I can do.  I only ever met one of my grandmothers cousins, and I do not know whether she was from the Ley or the Wollacott side of the family.  Her name was Olive Cole and her husband was called Harry.  they came to stay with my grandmother as they were emigrating to Australia where either their son or daughter lived.  They lived in either Morrabin or Moorooral Bark (or something like that) in Melbourne.  I can remember Olive used to send me cards (I think from tea) with Australian birds on for a time.  When I visited Melbourne for the first time in 1990 I looked in the telephone directory, but could not find anyone.  Iexpect they were long gone by then.

If you have any info on those where i have nothing i would be most interested.

Colin
