Orphanage is 1913 Newcastle
« on: Tuesday 18 February 20 03:35 GMT (UK) »
Would anyone know where I would be able to start searching for orphanage records for 1913.

I have Eleanor Frater nee Cowe in the 1911 census  she is with her  7 children (Robina, James, Christina, Dorothy, John, Frederick and Florence) ages ranging from 19 down to 6.  Rumor thats been passed down from Frederick's family says he was put in an orphanage when he was about 8 year old, which would coincide with the death of his mother in 1913. Their father was Archibald Frater died in 1907. Have also been unable to find a death for Frederick Archibald Frater. (Merchant Seaman) could be anywhere.

Be grateful of any help
Thanking You
Christine

Tyne and Wear Archives would be your best bet.

As an example, see: http://www.childrenshomes.org.uk/NewcastleBoysIS/
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Have also been unable to find a death for Frederick Archibald Frater. (Merchant Seaman) could be anywhere.

For anyone trying to help he was born 17 August 1904 and appears on Merchant Seaman records in 1918

Thank you Rosie I forgot to include  his birth date.

I have sent Tyne & Wear Archives an email to see if they may have some idea as to what orphanage he may of entered.

I was thinking that because he become a Merchant Seaman perhaps he was put on one of those Industrial Ships (just an Idea)

As has been mentioned there are a lot of possibilities regarding where Frederick may have ended up.

One thing to consider, as he was a seaman is, might he have been sent to the Wellesley?  This started as a training ship moored on the River Tyne which trained destitute boys.  When it was destroyed by a fire I believe it later moved to Blyth.  I am not totally sure but I think there are some records kept at Northumberland Archives (Woodhorn Museum).
