My goodness, I wasn’t expecting such speedy and very thorough replies!
There’s an awful lot to look into there and I thank you all for taking the time to reply :)
I’ll study this information  properly, after work over the next few days and report back.

Thanks so much again, I really appreciate the pointers, I’ve been stuck for a few weeks on this now!

Think this is the clincher:

1871 Census - Buccleuch, Edinburgh

Surname transcribed on Ancestry as 'Palan'?? but as Paton on FindMyPast:

Robert 44       Carter      born Par. Liberton, Edinburgh
Ann 39                          born Inveresk
Jessie 16  Rubber worker  born Duddington, Edinburgh
Andreas (?) 14  Printer   born Edinburgh
George 10     Scholar             ditto
James 6        Scholar             ditto
Robert 4                               ditto
William 18mos.                     ditto

Address is given as No.36 Bristo St. or No.8 Hamilton Entry, St. Giles district, Edinburgh on Anc. but as Hamilton Entry, 36 Bristo St on FindMyPast.

So, Robert Paton was born 24/6/1867 Edinburgh, son of Robert Paton, (carter per 1861 and 1871 census) and Ann nee Shaw.
