Sussex Wills
« on: Monday 24 February 20 22:00 GMT (UK) »
I'm currently looking into some Sussex wills and I wonder if anyone can help me with one of the references. Most of the wills are in the Consistitory Court of Chichester and I know that the references starting STC I/ refer to registered copies of Wills, and STC II/ refer to original copies of wills. Some of the wills I have on my list have references such as STC II/S.Dean/42 where 42 is the folio number. My question is what does the S.Dean refer to and can these be seen online? Have these been filmed by FamilySearch at all? I have copies of some wills with these references but I don't have a note of where they are from.

Also can wills or administrations starting with the reference "STCV" bee seen online anywhere?

Thank for any help or reminders.

Matt

Can you give some details of names of the testators or the dates perhaps?  I recognise the references from the BRS Vol 49.  Have you searched the West Sussex archives catalogue for further details?

FamilySearch has images of Sussex wills which can be viewed.  You do have to scroll through the images to find what you want.

S Dean could be Storrington Deanery.

We can see some of the original wills proved in the Chichester Consistory Court on FamilySearch

Taking an example of a "S. Dean" will from the free online index
Edward Lee of Billingshurst, S. Dean Page 5 Year 1615
https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=coo.31924009521307&view=1up&seq=217

On FamilySearch we need
Diocese of Chichester, Consistory Court Wills, 1534-1700
https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/567239?availability=Family%20History%20Library

Click on the camera icon for microfilm 1068598 (DGS 4428172), Original wills (STC I/II) 1613-1617

On that film we work our way to the Item 3 title board, Original Wills, 1615
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-6P77-D2X?i=452&cat=567239

They start with the Arundel Deanery wills
Moving onwards, image 588, has the cover for the Storrington Deanery wills.
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-6P77-6QS?i=587&cat=567239

Eventually(!) on image 662 we find the original will of said Edward Lee

Wow thanks to jonw65 for his posting. I am going to see if that can help me locate any of the wills I'm looking for in that time period.

I posted a list of names here before that message came through but it doesn't seem to be listed. Should I post it again?

Following on from the last message posted by johnw65 here's an example of one of the wills I'm trying to locate with the reference taken from the same original source

Robert Knight of Slynfolde - orig F 183 - year 1575
https://babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=coo.31924009521307&view=1up&seq=210

I assume "orig" is short for "original"

Now looking at the index for the Diocese of Chichester, Consistory Court Wills, 1534-1700
https://www.familysearch.org/search/catalog/567239?availability=Family%20History%20Library

Folder F should [with Wills ranging from 1570-1589] should be the first film in film number 1068591

When click on that one through it seems to start with folder "H", as if "F" is missing. I can't see it int he film above either.

Can anyone offer a suggestion?

Matt

Hi all. Thanks to Mckha489 for showing where to find that Will and for showing me where folder "F" is lol!

Unfortunately my posting from yesterday showing the references of people I am trying to locate in these files didn't seem to get through to Rootschat so I will post these names again. Oddly following the tips already given on here I've been able to find some of the Wills I'm looking for but not others even though I would expect them to be on the same film [if the probate year was the same for example].

Also I suspect some of the references are actually to Administrations which explains why I can't see them on a film of Wills. One example is Elizabeth Greenfield of Billingshurst - ref STC III/M/31 - year 1701. Can I view these online and are they easy to locate? I assume to letter refers to a folder, and the 31 means that's the number [or placement] in the folder?

Anyhow I'd be grateful if anyone could direct me to the correct film location for either the folder or will in each of the following cases:

Richard Greenfield of Billingshurst - year 1558 - ref STC II/B/225 so far I can't locate folder B but if F was not where I expected it [it was filmed after H lol!] then maybe B is in a different place so I will keep checking.

There is another Greenfield will, that of Thomas Greenfield, dated 1576, which is also in folder B. Would that be in the same place as the will of Richard above?

Walter Greenfield - 1611 - reference STC II/S.Dean/5 - I've been through the Storrington Deanery folder on the relevant film twice and just cannot spot Walter, unless it's badly written or I'm looking in the wrong place. Any suggestions?

On the other hand I did manage to find the following will

Richard Hayler of Billinghurst - 1616 - reference STC II/S.Dean/6 - the image number on FamilySearch is 848. Given that this is number 6 and the one for Walter Greenfield is number 5 I would have thought they be close. I only found this one whilst looking for Walter.

Ok last one for now.

Walter Knight - Slinfold - 1596 - STC II/Q/31

Again I may be either looking in the wrong place or may have missed the relevant folder. So any directions for either the folder or the actual will would be fantastic.

Finally does anyone know if wills with the references PTB 1/1 are filmed and can be viewed online? I am trying to track down some wills for Holdens in the parishes of Hurstpierpoint, Horsham, Woodmancote and Henfield and have references such as the following:

James Holden - 1697 Hurstpierpoint - PTB 1/1/34/34A

I have the microfilm references for the wills at the local archives but it would be useful if I could see them at home as I don't live near Sussex lol!

Thanks for the help so far and thanks for any more ideas, help or suggestions.

Matt
