Thomas CHALMERS 1707
« on: Sunday 01 March 20 13:35 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I am new to RootsChat and Geneaology in general so please bear with me.  I have built our family tree in MyHeritage and have been able to go back as far as Thomas Chalmers b. 1707 and married to Janet Wilson b. 1711.  Thomas born in Oldmuir, Dalry, Ayr.  I am unable to find any information at all prior to Thomas.  Also, my records show that Thomas' son, Thomas b. 1733 married Alison Chalmers b. 1734.  Alison is the daughter of William Chalmers b. 1696 and Helen Robinson b. 1700, both from Dalry, Ayr.  Again I can find information further back for William.

Any information provided would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you.

Welcome to RootsChat

Curious, where did you get Thomas Chalmers b 1707 from and who would be his mother.

I can find Thomas 1707 in many places such as Ancestry, My Heritage and many websites regarding Chalmers in Ayr.  I don't know who his mother would be as I cannot find anything earlier than Thomas, or William 1696.  This is why I came to this site for assistance.  Thanks.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Yes for Dalry I don't think the records begin until after 1650.

And most of the early records for baptisms don't include the mother.

I do not see a bapt for Thomas 1707 in Dalry below is the first on record.

CHALMERS THOMAS   THOMAS CHALMERS (father)
M 05/08/1733 587/ 10 61 Dalry

Dalry (Ayrshire) birth/baptism records began in 1680 and would appear to be pretty constant until 1854.

Marriage notices/Banns of that period rarely give any parents details

Unfortunately Death records appear to be non existant before Civil registration.

And just to muddy the waters a little - did you know there was another Dalry Parish in Kirkcudbright

Full name St. John's Town of Dalry, known locally as Dalry.

Thanks you all for the information.  I will follow up with Scotland's People site.  Its hard to know which sites are better than others for information so this is appreciated.  Thank you.

Actually, it's very easy.

Never trust anything you find online unless it's an image of an original document (and even then be wary because even originals can and do contain errors). In particular, never trust an online tree unless and until you have checked the sources and verified all the information.

The only online source of almost all original birth/baptism, banns/marriage and death information for Scotland is www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.
