Yes that is why I had originally thought I had the right baptism and in the right sort of area
James Stott c1775-1850. James was born in Yorkshire but where? He was a stonemason and married Elizabeth Archer (nee Nicholson) in 1794 at Ripon. They lived thereafter in Masham. If anyone has any suggestions or leads as to his birthplace I would be interested to know. I have searched for it for years without success. Thank you.

So the next question, if someone was born in Coxhoe where would their baptism come under, would it be Chester Le Street ?

Coxhoe was in Kelloe Parish until 1868.

Thanks both. There are no Irwin baptisms in Kelloe so I will stick with the one I have found for the time being.

(I did try Genuki to find the correct parish to no avail).

Still its been a good trip around Durham this afternoon  ;)

Thanks all.

For what it is worth Durham Records Online has transcribed the 1861 pob for Isabella as Coxhoe or Coshaw.

I can see exactly why you were drawn to the Chester le Street baptism with abode as Harraton - parents John and Mary and occupation as pitman. (There seems to be another John and Mary Irwin having children baptised in Chester le Street in this period - he is a publican in Pithill).

Do you think Isabella is  showing in 1841 living in Sacriston? if so father would appear to have remarried to a Barbara ( possibly Walton with a maiden name of Aisgill). If the correct family the 1851 census has a lot of Durham Nks for place of birth.

William
Dent (Haltwhistle and Sacriston), Bell and Jetson (Haltwhistle), Postle, Ward, Longstaff, Purvis, Manners, Parnaby and Hardy (Co. Durham), Kennedy and McRobert (Banffshire), Reid(Bathgate), Watson (Wemyss), Graham (Libberton), Sandilands (Carmichael), Munro (Dingwall)

Thank you. That is an interesting entry after all Isabella names her daughter Barbara and that Barbara if the right couple would be her step mother (1836 marriage). I shall have a look at that and the other one and then probably end up with a list of alternatives  ;) (Fortunately not my direct line!)

Hi,  Just seen this post and for what it is worth would like to offer my opinion.
Hi,

Harraton Colliery was situated in the village of Harraton, in the district of Chester-le-Street Town, Co. Durham, part of that pit was called Nova Scotia, and became known locally as  'Cotia'
Cosha, Coshaw or however they felt like spelling it.  Could this be the solution to your problem?  Our grandfather was a miner here for many years.  Hope this might help.

Regards,

Thank you for the suggestion.

I will make a note of it and come back to this in the future as I am presently going through my tree checking entries, still some way to go. I hate to say it but I am convinced Ancestry have deleted some of the entries I made but then again might just be my memory going haywire!

Your welcome David and hope you are soon able to solve your problem, my gut feeling is that this
is where the answer to your query lies.  Local pitmatic dialogues and pronunciations differ a lot in this
and I guess the Emunerator doing the Census in question just wrote down what it sounded like.

   Good luck,
