Hugh Gibb 1812 - 1895 Mauchline
« on: Wednesday 04 March 20 13:23 GMT (UK) »

My Gt Gt Grandad - he seems to have been 'a remarkable man' according to his obituary in various
newspapers. I wonder if anyone on here is related.
He was born to James Gibb and Mary Donald and married Helen Morton on 21.7.1843. I have only
just started on this branch so information is sparse apart from newspaper articles found on FindMyPast.
Would really love to connect to a cousin or two. Many thanks.

Hi Monty Dog welcome Rootschat.

I don't know if you will find anyone on here related to you but do you have membership of Ancestry?

Thank you for replying. Yes, I do have ancestry subscription and will check out the family trees
there. Just trying all avenues of enquiry, you never know what you might find out. Already had a reply to a post this afternoon regarding another branch of my family so I'm well chuffed. Wish I'd thought to use roots chat sooner.

Have you looked at "Surname Interests" and added yours?
Why was Hugh Gibb "a remarkable man"?

Thank you Maiden Stone will check out Surname Interests.
According to his obituary he was ’a remarkable man'.  He was a shoemaker from Mauchline in Ayrshire who was very socially involved and ahead of his time. He was an authority on Robbie Burns.
There are many mentions of him in newspapers of the time, and his obituary is in many, many newspapers across the U.K. There is a large marble monument to him in Mauchline Cemetery, erected a few years after his death.  I haven't seen it yet but I hope to before too long. 🤞
The newspaper section of FindMyPast is where I found the information I have.
