'Mr T Allen Stokes(Coroner) held an inquest on Saturday evening at the Lion Inn, Pensnett, on the body of William Millard(60) of St James Terrace, Eve Hill, Dudley- The evidence showed that Millard had for some months been out of work, and latterly had been considerably depressed. On Thursday he was in the area of Pensnett, and fell into the company of Donald Williams, a young man. Together they walked to the colliery of Messrs.Marsh, Old Park, Pensnett, and for a little time stood together near the water shaft. When Williams turned to go, Joseph Marsh saw Millard turn to the shafts and throw himself down. During the afternoon, the body which was much mutilated, was recovered by Benjamin Marsh and was taken charge of by Police-constable  Tierman. The jury returned a verdict of suicide whilst temporarily insane.'
