Albert Edward Rowles was born on Monday, 16th April 1894 at 57 Arden Street, Gillingham, Medway, Kent, the son of Walter Charles and Elizabeth Rowles (née Grove), a ‘Fitter & Turner’.
He was baptised on Sunday, 1st November 1885 at St. John’s Church, Redhill, Surrey.
In the 1911 census he is age 16 and his occupation is ‘Errand Boy’.
He is living with his parents, brothers and sisters at 19 Milner Road, Gillingham, Kent.
He enlisted in the Royal Navy on 16th June 1912 for 12 years.
He served on HMS Indomitable, HMS Pembroke, and HMS Lord Nelson.
He was sentenced to 28 days for an offence (not listed), but was discharged on 3rd September 1913 on medical grounds.
He sailed to Australia from London on 22nd May 1914, arriving at Brisbane on the ship ‘Orama’.
He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force on 2nd September 1915. He gave his occupation as ‘Labourer’. He gave his father, Walter Charles Rowles, as his next of kin, living at 19 Miller Road, Gillingham, Kent. He was taken on strength on the 6th March 1916 in Egypt and ‘wounded in action’ on the 8th August 1916. He was sent back to England on the 13th August with ‘Gun Shot Wounds’ to the left knee. He was eventually returned to Australia on the 13th February 1917 as a result of his injury, on the ship ‘Ulysses’. He was discharged on 23rd May 1917 as medically unfit.
He married Ruby Mann on 26th April 1924 at St. Saviour’s Church, Laidley, Queensland.
At the time of his marriage he was listed as being a ‘Resident of Queensland Agricultural College’ for
many years. Ruby possibly died 23.9.1986, age 87.
A newspaper article dated 17th April 1954 describes a collision of 2 cars in which Albert Edward and his wife Ruby were seriously hurt. His address was given as Evelyn Street, Grange, Brisbane.
He died on 18th October 1972 at Brisbane, age 78.
