WCH
« on: Thursday 19 March 20 19:22 GMT (UK) »
I'm been looking at the record of a relative who was admitted to Mile End Workhouse in 1857.

There is a note to say his wife was in WCH.  I assumed this was Whipps Cross Hospital.  I've now read that West Ham Union Workhouse Infirmary only changed its name to Whipps Cross Hospital in 1917.

So, what does WCH stand for?

Could be Whitechapel.

ADDED - or White Chapel House (meaning the Whitechapel workhouse).

What is the column heading please?

Thanks for the reply.

It's in the remarks column.

There's one entry on the page that says transferred from WCH, several that were transferred from WC and one that I think says  WC Home??

So, if it actually says transferred, then it's almost certainly another institution. WC is probably Whitechapel, which is adjacent to Mile End. It might be worth searching for an entry in the Whitechapel admission/discharge register.

Are these on Ancestry - I haven't found them  ???

I think perhaps only the Whitechapel Infirmary is online for the relevant year (STBG/WH/123/003):
London, England, Workhouse Admission and Discharge Records, 1764-1930
Tower Hamlets
Stepney
Workhouses and Institutions, 1855-1858

Can you post the details of the entry that you're looking at in the Mile End workhouse, and it might be easier to help?

Here you go

http://www.rootschat.com/links/01p78/

I'm afraid this register is not the Mile End workhouse - it's the Porter's Admission/Discharge book for the Whitechapel Infirmary (STBG/WH/123/003).

It implies that while the husband was in the Infirmary, the wife was in the main part of the Whitechapel workhouse, for which there are no admission/discharge registers available for this date.

The only other thing I can suggest is browsing the unindexed settlement records on Ancestry, if there is anything for Whitechapel at this date.

London, England, Poor Law and Board of Guardian Records, 1738-1926
Tower Hamlets
Stepney
Settlement Papers

Unfortunately I don't have time to help with that right now, sorry.

Thanks for putting me straight.

I'll have a look through the settlements records.

Thank you
