James Murphy Barrhead Postmaster
« on: Friday 20 March 20 04:32 GMT (UK) »
I wonder if anyone can help me with my search for James Murphy. He was born on April 8th 1899,
His parents were William Murphy and Mary Finlay, he had a sister Minnie and a brother William. He was also half brother to Mary Jane Connis, my Mother. This is the information I have that I know to be accurate.
Can anyone fill me in with what may have happened to him. I was told he was the postmaster in Barrhead Post Office, maybe around 1920.? That he did marry ? and that they lost a child in a terrible accident about the same time. I cant seem to get any further than the accurate information I do have so hoping someone can help me out.  Thanks, weeblether

Have you looked for a marriage or death on Scotlands People?

www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk

Is this a possible death?

James Murphy aged 37 died 1935 ref 572/2 56 Barrhead and Levern

As you have his full birthdate this may also be a possibility if the above death isn't him

Thanks CaroleW for your prompt reply. I tried to find him on SP but there were so many with the same name I just got bogged down with it. He was still alive in 1945 but after that I have no idea of his age at death.
I don't know his wife's maiden name or the name or sex of the child who died.
I am not quite sure where to go from the little information I do have.
Thanks again CaroleW

So 1945 is a starting point for a death search.  What info do you have that confirms he was alive in 1945 and how reliable is it?

I have found the 3 children, William 14, James, 11 & Minnie, 9 living with there uncle James 46 & his wife, Helen & their children at 38 Glasgow Rd, Barrhead, on the 1911 census. No sign of their parents. The eldest, William R. is a Telegraph Messenger for the GPO.

Uncle James & wife Helen were both born in Ireland.

The 3 siblings were all born in Bridgeton & 2 are with William 30 & Mary 29 on the 1901 Bridgeton census.

You know for definite that James was the son of William Murphy and Mary Finley.
This couple married in  Bridgeton, Glasgow in 1894.

There is a death for Mary Murphy other name Finlay who is aged 60 and registered in Dennistoun.

This information would possibly suggest that their son, James Murphy was not from Renfrewshire.

Based on your info, this is potentially your couple with the two sons named:
1901: 182 Dalmarnock Road, Bridgeton

Name   Age
William Murphy   30 born Ireland. Chemical Works Stoker
Mary Murphy   29 Born Ireland. Wife
William R Murphy 4 Son b Glasgow ( Matches to William Robinson Murphy  birth reg 1896, Bridgeton
James Murphy   1

This is a potential starting point that indicates James may have been born in Glasgow between 1899 and 1900

EDIT Apologies Kloumann, we were posting the same info at the same time

The James that died in 1937 was not him. Used a spare credit!
