I mentioned in a previous post that he was old enough to serve in the 1st WW. There were a few Wm Murphy's that died serving with Scottish Regiments but difficult to to tie them down to your relative.

There are 9 service returns of war deaths for Wm Murphy's on SP. 3 have no age mentioned & 2 are in the right age group. A 21 yo in 1917 & a 22 yo in 1918. All the others are too old.
You would need credits to check them.

Unfortunately the deaths recorded in the service returns don't list the names of the deceased's parents or spouse, so there is little point in looking at them in your case.

Try https://www.cwgc.org/find/find-war-dead/ because very often (not always) the listing there does include the names of parents and/or spouse.

1 of the 2 Williams that fits the age group left a soldier's Will which is on SP. He was a private with Argyll & Southern Highlanders.

Thank you all so much, through your help I have been able to find out when James died with his birth, death and marriage certificates. I am still struggling with William's information on SP. but I will keep at it, I find SP difficult to navigate sometimes.
Thanks again for your help, much appreciated.
