Help Needed to Find Marriage in Ireland
« on: Sunday 21 August 05 23:20 BST (UK) »
Willaim Meakin was a Colour Sergeant in the 86th Regiment
which was posted to Belfast/Dublin, Cork Colonmel &
Templemore Ireland between 1839 & 1843.

During this stay I think he married Mary Ann (surname unknown)
before the Regiment went to India.

They are found back in England on the 1861 which gives
Mary's birth place as Ireland so my guess is that
William married Mary Ann during the time he was in
Ireland.

Is there some kind person who can help me to find
a record of this marriage please?

Thanks for looking saz.

It was worth a try I guess but now it's back
to the drawing board.  Perhaps they did not marry
in Ireland at all and if so then it's anyone's guess
where the marriage took place.   The confusing
part is that in a later census Mary gives her place
of birth as "AT SEA"!   Her occupation is always
recorded as Midwife.

Pardon my ignorance  but can you tell me please
what the term BIVRI stands for?

It stands for British Isles Vital Records Index - prepared by Latter Day Saints. Not a complete record of births and marriages - so just because not on there dosn't mean it didn't take place.

The other possibility is they married at sea on way to India. There may be some web sites that you could check to see if they are on passenger lists but it might be better if you could narrow dates down somehow.

Perhaps someone will suggest sites you could try.

Happy hunting

Thanks for that  saz.

The reason I felt that William and Mary had married in
Ireland was because William's regiment was in Manchester
in 1838 and posted to Dublin in 1840.  From later cenus records
it appears their first child, William Meakin, was born in Dublin in 1842 and
their next child in Bombay in 1844.   Perhaps they married
in Manchester before going to Ireland?

Do you think there might be a record somewhere of the birth
of their first child in Ireland?

Hi,

The only place to try for the birth of the Irish child is baptismal records. You need to know the religion and parish.

Thanks Kate,
These two are not making it easy are they!
The only clue I have is from the 1861 British
census which records the son William as being born
in Dublin Ireland and my guess would be they
were Anglican rather than Catholic.
Do you think there is any chance of finding
him?

HI,

There is a small database (Well small compared to the size of Dublin) of some of the parish records catholic and anglican. It is in the Dublin City archives and probably elsewhere too. I don't know if it is accessible elsewhere. Otherwise there must be about 20 surviving anglican parish records for Dublin the Representative Church Body Library in Dublin.
