1881 census Ontario, then where did they go.
« on: Sunday 21 August 05 23:24 BST (UK) »
Could any one help please.
I am told that my ancestors emigrated to Canada or USA.
I have them in the UK 1871 census but nothing later that that.
They are:-
Robert J Roberts b1834 Denbigh, Wales - book-keeper
Elizabeth             b1838 Manchester. England
Abel                     b 1861 Liverpool UK
Elizabeth Ermine  b 1865     "
Mary A                  b 1868
Robert E.              b1870.
On the LDS Canada 1881 census, I found
Robert J. Roberts (age shown as 42 but 2 could
look a bit like 7)book-keeper. Born Wales
Elizabeth age 43 born England
Robert Ed age 11 born Wales (should be England)
Surely this is too close to be of coincidence? But the girls are not shown!!!!!
The Census place says. St. John's Ward, Toronto, York, Ontario. District 134. Sub district D. Division1. Page 92. Household No. 514.
My question is, how do I go about finding out anymore about them, where did they go, did the son get married etc.
I have tried looking in 1901 census without any luck, mainly because I do not know what to look up or where, if I try searching St. John's Wood, I get a blank, there are several Yorks, I just seem to be getting nowhere.
any advice would be appreciated.
Margaret

Hi Margaret,
You can search the 1901 Canadian census here:
http://automatedgenealogy.com/census/cache/NationalSummary.jsp

I would look at all of the provinces.

Good luck,
Indi

Hello

this may be of interest to you (although the age is right there may be no connection)

ROBERTS, Elizabeth, f, January 17, 1892, 55 years, Liverpool, cause – Bright’s disease, infm – Dr. Andrew Jerome Harrington of Toronto, (Toronto) 029955-92

It looks like they stayed in the Toronto area. You could try posting a message on a board here (both Toronto and York areas are the most likley areas)
http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.northam.canada.ontario

or join a mailing list here
http://lists.rootsweb.com/index/intl/CAN/CAN-ONT-YORK.html

With the death date you could try to find the death registration papers and possibly an obit - try these methods

go to your closest public library or Family History Center and request the microfilm for deaths, Jan, 1892 for Toronto via interlibrary loan. Here is a link to their site which details what is available -
http://www.archives.gov.on.ca/english/guides/rg_202_vs_bulletin.htm

go to this site and select a volunteer from Toronto, send a specific message (be as detailed as possible) asking for a copy of the death registration, perhaps a copy of an obit (if there was one), and perhaps also look ups in the Henderson City Directories for Toronto from the 1880's on.  You must make only ONE request every two weeks and be careful not to duplicate your requests. The admin monitors the site and removes requests where someone has made too many requests in a short period or where someone has requested the same information from more than one person.

At the moment I can not find anywhere to look but will keep pondering it.

Thelma
Thank you so much for your time and trouble, you have given me so much to work on, I have a hunch that Elizabeth is the correct one which also tells us that they were still residing in the area in1892. I have been trying to get info myself for months on this family and drawn a complete blank, you have given me so much  in one day, I am a very happy 'Roberts'.
Can't delay must get on those site immediately!!!
Regards
Margaret
