Devlin
« on: Saturday 21 March 20 14:26 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm looking to trace the Devlin family of County Armagh. My 4th great grandmother was Bridget Devlin born 1844/1845 in County Armagh but emigrated to Durham.

I'm assuming the first step would be to find her marriage certificate in Durham and get parents names.

Other than that, any tips going forward? I know I'm going back a long way and will probably struggle to find anything.

Thanks

Marriage Cert details first...

Civil Reg started 1864 for R.C's so one can look for siblings marrying etc...

Then RC Church Registers are online free,  1901 and 1911 Census free too.

Only when Parents are known from Cert!!
Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.
Teach a man to research, and you feed him for a lifetime.

You also need to check all possible English census records if she moved there from Ireland. It's possible she was living with parents, siblings or other relatives and tracing them would help build a family tree.
Ireland was part of the U.K. so she didn't 'emigrate' but simply moved from Ireland to England. The civil certificate of her marriage should list father's name and occupation but will not show details of her mother. A church record, of the marriage took place in one, may show mother's name.
