Directory look up Cheltenham pre-1844
« on: Monday 22 August 05 10:18 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have a directory of Cheltenham residents pre-1844?  I have been trying unsuccessfully to find William Wasley (died 1844) and wife Mary.  I believe he lived at Hyde Farm, Hyde Lane in the Swindon/Prestbury area of Cheltenham, and would like to know if that is correct or not.  If anyone can help, I would be very grateful.

I have just discovered that there was another Hyde Farm in the Gloucester Rd/Alstone area of Cheltenham, so maybe that is the one.

I've been to Cheltenham Library to check out your data request.  Cheltenham Annuaires, pre-1844 ONLY list the Gentry and Tradesmen.  I checked back to 1837.
The only WASLEY I found was one Thomas WASLEY, Carrier variously trading from 224 & 241 High Street.

PORTER, Gunmakers of Whitechapel
ALLEN - Blockley, BOWLES - Notgrove, BURROWS - Sevenhampton, COOK - Notgrove, DRINKWATER-LUNN - Aston Cross, FARDON - Temple Guiting, FAULKNER - Cheltenham, GADEN, GAYDEN, GAYDON, GRINHAM - Cheltenham, HART - Stow-on-the-Wold, LANE - Staverton, MOABY - Coln St Aldwyns, STAITE - Temple Guiting, TIMBRELL - Winchcombe, TYSOE - Warks & Glos, WHITFORD - Stanway, WINTLE - Forest of Dean, WYNNIATT - Stanway

Many thanks for looking it up for us.  Thomas Wasley was the brother of William.  I was interested that you are a Cheltenham Harvey - my husband's family are Cheltenham Harveys - are you related to George Harvey b 1840 Cheltenham, the son of  John Harvey born Bath around 1801.  George had 9 siblings all born Cheltenham, married Elizabeth Ann Saunders and had 2 sons and 2 daughters.  Most of the family were in the printing business.
Best wishes,
Ann Harvey

My Harvey family hail from Guiting Power in the Cotswolds circa 1767, although many of them are now living in Cheltenham.
Unfortunately we don't interface.

Thomas Wasley Carrier Cheltenham

I believe I am a descendant of Thomas Wasley born about 1790 and who was a Carrier operating from High Street Cheltenham.  I have seen old posts on this site that refer to him and was wondering if there was any updated information about Thomas.
