Or, is it a coincidence that both surnames appear in the same quarter in the same year, in the same area?

Using the surname Allen, there is still only one J Allen marrying LEICESTER in MAR 1973 and that is to the female ALLEN.

The only other is in JUN 1973 and it is a J T ALLEN.

I think you need to get more information from your friend.
