From Scotland to Birmingham
« on: Friday 03 April 20 19:18 BST (UK) »
Hi, I'm new here, from Denmark and trying to find my great-great grandmother from Scotland.
I know she ( Ann Macpherson) is born somewhere in Scotland between 1839 and 1841, properly in Edinburgh but not sure. I know she got married in Birmingham in 1860, but her husband dies 3 years later, and their daughter I can't find after she gets married again in 1865, also in Birmingham. So my guess is that she is very young when she came to Birmingham. Could it be possible to find some records of people coming from Scotland to England, some kind og af registration ?

I know her father was a tailor an maybe in the army, but on her first married certificate in 1860 his name is John MacPherson and when she remarried in 1865 his name is James Macpherson, both tailor, but can anyone tell my why the name difference?
I don't know her mothers name og the fathers history or birth year, it is very hard to find something about them. Is that normal?

Yes and they had a child named Emily Mason. In 1865 she married a man names Charles Jones and they got 4-6 children I think but when I find them in census Emily is not there. maybe she died or was given away? don't know what was normal in England at that time?

I think I have found her as an nice in Birmingham ( servant) in 1851 cencus in Bradford street with an Alexander Mcpherson ( master tailor also born in Scotland ) and his wife Phoebe McPherson. But in 1841 census I have found the same people without Ann, but with a child called James Mcpherson born in Ireland and a Jannet Mcpherson ( maybe a mother to Alexander ) but in 1851 census both Jannet and James are not mentioned.

Thank you, yes maybe she is born else where, could be possible. It was a guess because my grandmother mentioned several time that Ann was registered in Edinburgh, but maybe all births are that? And they are all tailors on that side of my family.
And I have now spend a lot og money on credits on scotlandspeople site, only to se that it is not that person I'm looking for ::)

It should say if her husband is married or widowed on the census.  Is this in England or Scotland you find Chas Jones and the children?

Sorry I was getting Ann and Emily mixed up  :-[

Michelle,

There are no records of movement from Scotland to England (it is all the one country) and we don’t have a local registration system – as many European countries do – requiring people to register with the town hall or local authority, when they move to a new town. So for genealogy in the UK you have to rely fairly heavily on censuses & births, deaths & marriage records.

Hi Michelle

Welcome to RootsChat from me too  :)

You mentioned a possible occupation, apart from tailor, of army for Ann's father, John/James. What is the source for potentially an army career?

There is this 1841 census entry in Myton, Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire
www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQ5S-CMY

All born in Scotland:

John McPherson 35
Elizabeth McPherson 25
John McPherson 4
Anney McPherson 2
Alexr McPherson 5 Months (from original image)

I cannot easily make out father John's occupation, but could read army? Snip below.
