« on: Tuesday 07 April 20 03:09 BST (UK) »
Happy isolation.
I am currently researching [Maori Land court minute books] this colourful gentleman, Paramount Chief of Maketu, Kawhia. 'Te Kihirini te kanawa' . I wish to correspond to those that have a connection to him, in order to complete his Whakapapa. Welcome your input and help.
I also have a DNA connection to Potatau Te Wherowhero.

Many thanks
Murray

Hello.

Have contacted Murray by PM. Advised of old files held by Archives NZ that may contain correspondence, and land info, re family members. Most are held at Wellington, but any that are unrestricted and held at Auckland, I may be able to look up and photograph, when the public are free to travel again. He has already received advise to consult the on line EARLY NZ BOOKS for period research into Kawhia, and it's association with coastal traders and missionaries.

Hi,
Waitangi Tribunal reports online can also provide information.
You might be interested in WAI 898 #A26
"The Rohe Potae - Commercial Economy in the mid-19th century c1830-1886 of February 2011 by Andrew Francis.  See pages 12/13
It is a report commissioned by the Waitangi Tribunal.
It mentions a Thomas Smith (Tamete) "...Tamete was taken by Te Kanawa and settled at Maketu ...".

Good call.  I was studying that report, and Kawhia history, on a project a year ago for research I was doing but forgot to mention it.
