How do you know Mary Ann's surname was Gatward if you haven't got a marriage record?

This is exactly why I'm looking for such a marriage. I was told by a member of the Crane descendants sometime ago  but  I didn't pursue it at the time  as it wasn't a line I was following then and he could not/ did not furnish proof.
I'm querying it now because although age and place of her birth fits I found two marriages for a Mary Gatward at St Nicholas, Castle Hedingham #1 to George Basham 10 Nov.1818. #2 for Mary Gatward to John Ely 19 August 1825 same place.
Edward Gatward and wife Ann  ( she was born Saffron Waldon) went on to have more children in Castle Hedingham and died there  1837/1830 respectively.

Apart from Mary's burial record in Epping, no other record I can find gives a middle name of Ann or a middle initial. I think the marriage of a Mary Wallis to Thomas Crane on 2 Apr 1820 in Dagenham is the most likely. Wit Edward Wallis and Susan Bone. All made their mark.
William (son) says he was born in Rainham - his age gives a birth year around 1822. I have found baptism in Hornchurch 30 Sep 1821 (born 31 Aug) s/o Thomas and Mary. In Rainham, Elizabeth Crane bapt 25/01/ 1824 d/o Thomas and Mary abode Hornchurch, so looks like sister. Rainham and Hornchurch both not too far from Dagenham.
Mary Ann Gatward's baptism keeps popping up on Ancestry hints, but no evidence at all to connect it to the Cranes.

Looking at Wallises in Saffron Walden,
In 1851 there's a Henry b abt 1793 married (no wife with him) with son William b abt 1839 and two grandchildren. He's a Chelsea pensioner. Son William's mother's maiden name is Pettit. There's a marriage for a Henry Wallis of Hinxton,  Cambs and Ann Pettit at Walden on 31 Aug 1814.
In 1861, Henry and Ann are together in Almshouse Lane, he's a shoemaker journeyman. Can't find Henry in 1841, but Ann is in Butter market with son William and 3 older children. I wonder if Henry is another sibling.
In 1841 there is a Mary b abt 1757 - a generation older.

Added
Henry bapt 08 Jan 1792 at SW s/o Henry and Mary Wallis

Thank you LizzieL.  It would seem that is the most likely explanation for Mary, Thomas and their family and my doubts were well placed. I have to admit that something  ' just didn't feel right', and I will now pursue those marriages in Castle Hedingham to see if I can learn anything  from there.
Again many thanks.
Stay safe and well :)

Hi LizzieL     I have just joined rootschat and seen your messages re Gatward.  She is a member of my father's family : Crane   4th generation.   I was just at Copped Hall in Epping on Sunday where William Crane (her son) worked as an agricultural labourer and died in 1890 died after falling from a haystack!
