John Begbie
« on: Friday 10 April 20 12:12 BST (UK) »
John Begbie worked as a house servant to the Cunningham family of Robertson at a place called Auchenskeith in Riccarton parish near to Galston around 1777. John later became a vintner an inn keeper in Kilmarnock and knew Robert Burns.

Burns had a romantic interest with Alison Begbie a farmers daughter from Old Place near Cessnock. Cessnock is close to Riccarton. I think they could well be related.

John married Anne Lauder no date found. I also found several children born in Riccarton and Kilmarnock parish.

I am trying to prove a link between Alison and John and also to find his date and place of marriage and death.

The moderator of the Truly Scottish Genealogy  website and Facebook page - Grannie Begbie maybe worth a try.

No joy there.

Maybe some local historians in Ayrshire could help?

Hi lls

I am not a local historian but just looking around with your details.

Have you seen this mention of Alison Begbie possibly being Gebbie? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alison_Begbie

I did a search for John with the surname Gebbie to see what may show. So happens there is a John Gebbie, son of Alexander who was born or christened on 3 March 1751.

Maybe something to consider in your searches?

John and wife Ann Lauder had at least 13 children? Son John born or christened on 23/07/1799 in Kilmarnock shows as their 13th child in the OPRs.

Hi Monica

Thank you. I know about the children from research on SP.

I also know about the Gebbie you mention.

Have you got a copy of the entry for John in 1799?

Made a mistake with the details for 13th child. From the index on SP,:

Fanny BEGBIE
JOHN BEGBIE/ANNE LAWDER FR890 CHILD 13
23/07/1799
Ref 597/30 444
Kilmarnock
