Do you have his Burial?

12 Aug 1840 St James, Ashwick
Age 74
Abode Frome

As you know he married Betty VINNELL 11 Nov 1813, she was a Spinster, he was a Widower.

Nothing to do with your query but I am bored!

Children were from this Marriage;
Baptisms;
ANN 05 Oct 1816
THOMAS 23 May 1818

There are Bapt Frome for a Thomas/Elizabeth Burge 1794-1802
So possible children to Thomas with his 1st Wife

I did notice one of the children from possible 1st Marriage is Catherine Webb Burge 1794.
(possibly buried as Kathrien Burge 20 Apr 1796 Ashwick, Daug of Thomas/Betty)

So could this be his 1st Marriage;
13 Apr 1789 St Michael, Stoke Lane
Thomas Burge to Elizabeth Webb
(Betty Burge a witness)

So possible child Bapt there;
JOHN 26 Sep 1790

+ a Burial Ashwick 26 Apr 1803, Betty, Wife of Thomas
+ one of their Daug, Frances Chambury Burge buried 02 Apr 1803 age 1

All above on FreeREG

Thank you everyone.  You have given me a bunch of places to start my search for his will.  Hopefully I will be able to find it.

Hope you all had a great Easter and stay safe.

Vicki

You may have seen the death announcements:

"Aug. 8, at Frome, aged 76, Mr. Thomas Burge, corn dealer, and formerly an extensive common carrier."

15 August 1840 - Oxford Journal and
20 August 1840 - Devizes and Wiltshire Gazette

ShaunJ,

Thank you.  I have not seen this information.  What you show in your post, is that all that is mentioned?  Also, do you know what a common carrier was during this time frame?

Again, thank you.

Yes that is all that is mentioned.

"Common Carrier" has a legal definition in the UK: "a person who exercises the public profession of carrying the goods of all persons wishing to use his services or of carrying passengers whoever they may be. "
"To constitute himself a common carrier of goods, a carrier must hold himself out, either expressly or by a course of conduct, as willing to carry for reward, so long as he has room, goods of all persons indifferently who send him goods to be carried at a reasonable price. He must hold himself out as ready to carry for hire as a business and not as a casual occupation for a particular occasion. A carrier's advertising literature may be material in establishing his willingness to carry goods for all those who may call upon his services. The same criteria apply for a common carrier of passengers, namely the carrier must hold himself out as ready to carry all persons indifferently who wish to be carried at the proper fare. If a carrier reserves to himself the right to reject persons or goods whom he is asked to carry according to his usual course of business, or if he carries only certain passengers or goods for certain customers, he is not a common carrier."

Thank you.  That information is very fascinating.  It gives me a little insight in who Thomas Burge was.

I just found a mention in a newspaper that Thomas Burge of Frome Selwood a carrier is bankrupt in 1819.  Would there be anything in court documents for information on this?

Thanks.
