Edward DALTON Census 1841-1851 and Death Records
« on: Monday 13 April 20 13:44 BST (UK) »
Hi, I am new to the forum so forgive me if I am not asking in the right place :). I am seeking further information in relation to one Edward Dalton who i believe is my 4 x great grandfather.  I have confirmed my 3 x grandfather as Cain Dalton (an unusual name) has a father Edward whose profession is described as Cooper.  I think i have located Edward on the 1851 census and again on the 1841 census although the surname maybe miss-spelt as 'Daulton'. The 1841 census shows a lot of children (but no Cain). I'd like to confirm this is correct and also nail down a date of death for Edward. I am also very interested in attempting to track back to his parents. He was apparently born in Gibraltar in 1801 (described in 1851 census as British Subject) so I am wondering if his father was in the British Army or Royal Navy at the time?  However, I cannot find any trace of an Edward Dalton born in Gibraltar on any of the online resources I have checked. Any help or advice gratefully received.

Kind regards SRD17

Firstly welcome to RootsChat  :)

Using the GRO facility to verify the age at death, I believe that Edward Dalton died in March quarter 1857 in Leeds.  Age from GRO is stated to be 56 which ties in with a birth year of 1801.

Transcriptions and NBI are merely finding aids.  They are NOT a substitute for original record entries.

Thanks very much BumbleB!  I'll look that up. This ties in with a burial record for an Edward Dalton in Jan 1857. Although I am not sure if Roman Catholic's would be buried in the municipal burial ground.

Most municipal cemeteries had areas for various religions.

I believe that Edward Dalton was buried in the Anglican Section of Beckett Street Cemetery in Leeds:

Register No:  11846
Grave No: 5743 - Edward Dalton of 2 Glue Street, buried 18 January 1857 aged 56

The heading for the images and transcription of this entry says that it was the Anglican Section.

Edward Dalton born 1801, Gibraltar, is in more than 10 trees on Ancestry.  None of the publicly available ones have parents for him, but others have many documents attached.  Worth looking at them?
