Records of Teachers / Tutors 19th Century
« on: Monday 20 April 20 18:11 BST (UK) »
Trying to find any records of my ancestors who were teachers or school masters. Henry Keane  (1813-1887) taught at Kingstown and possibly Portarlington. His father John Keane (dob unknown) was also a tutor.
Any advice gratefully received.
Reid in Roxburghshire, McLoughlin in Castlebar, Mullin in Mayo,
Golden in Newry, Garvey in Belfast, Keane in Dublin.

Thanks for the link.
Unfortunately my Keanes are not listed. Henry was at Dr Stackpooles school at Kingstown which seems to have closed in 1870, pre dating these records.
Cheers
John

Thanks Dathai,
His first marriage was to Frances Callaghan on 21 Dec 1842 at St Peters, Dublin. I have no further details for Frances. Their son John James Keane was born 15 Jan 1845 and was baptised at the French Church, Portarlington. I have found one other child from the marriage, Frances Keane born 21 Sep 1843.

There was at least one, maybe more, listing of all teachers in Ireland published in the British Parliamentary Papers during the 19th century. Available free online - can find using Duckduckgo search.

Thanks Wexflyer,
I checked it out and there looks like there are some records of teachers. Unfortunately I couldn’t search them online.

Um, take a look at https://archive.org/details/britishparliamentarypublications
Thousands of documents available!
Specific documents to look for there and on the web in general:
1835 State of religious and other instruction now existing in Ireland
1835 Returns of Books, Schools and Children of Religious Denominations
1835 [45] [46] [47] First report of the Commissioners of Public Instruction, Ireland.
- and many subsequent reports.
January 1839 Return of Sums paid to Irish National Board of Education
1847 List of Teachers in Workhouse schools
1851 Parliamentary Papers, House of Commons and Command, Volume 43, Part 1
1862 - 1864 National education (Ireland)

... and many, many more!
No end of sources in fact.
