Boarding Schools in the 20s and 30s?
« on: Friday 24 April 20 03:19 BST (UK) »
Hi all, new to RootsChat so apologies if this is the wrong place to post!

My Grandmother Doreen May Woodington, 1917-1975 (Daughter of Ethelbert Woodington,1884-1942  and Ella Maud Rogers 1881-1927) is rumoured to have lived with an "aunt and uncle" at a boys boarding school after her mother's death and before her marriage in 1939. I'm running into a dead end trying to find even the names of boarding schools that existed around this time.

Any help or point in the direction would be much appreciated.

Welcome to rootschat

To give some idea of location Doreen was born in Keynsham reg district in 1917 and married in Salisbury reg district in 1939.  I am not allowed to post details from the 1939 register but she is not at a boarding school then.

Have you traced all of Ethelbert & Ellas siblings to see if any of them were employed at a boarding school

The 1938 and 1939 electoral rolls for Thornbury (Bristol) has Doreen resident at 94 High Street (Hanham) with Ethelbert Woodington, Frederick George Woodington and Ada Woodington.

Ethelbert Woodington (43) married Ada Bird (40) at Bitton, Gloucestershire, on 22 September 1928. From the electoral rolls it appears that he resided in Hanham all through the 1920's and 1930's.

I did see that she was back living with her father brother and stepmother from the electoral rolls. I think you suggestion to trace her parents siblings makes the most sense to focus on finding which aunt or uncle it might have been makes the most sense.
