Converting .avi files to .mp4 COMPLETED

As the title says, I have a number of .avi files that were the result of video editing from the 1990's and 2000's.   I've just discovered that our television no longer supports the .avi format (nice of Toshiba to tell customers).   I therefore want to convert the files to .mp4.   There appear to be many different programs that can do this - has anyone got a preference from personal experience?   I'd prefer to use a freebie as this will be a one off exercise, but I'm not too bothered if it has to be a paid for program - results are the key for me.

It would appear that my video editing software has an obscure function that allows this - I'm going to try it, but in the meantime, I would appreciate recommendations

Why not try an online convertor.....

There should be a reduction in file size as mpeg4 are compressed codecs.

You can convert them yourself but there are a few settings you need to familiarise yourself with
first to get the right results.

Thanks,  I'll give it a go.   It would appear that my editing software has removed support for .avi files.

Thanks for the replies.   Unfortunately, convertfiles.com just sits with the progress at % of 0Kb and does nothing and online-convert.com has a file size limit after which it requires payment.

Luckily, my son-in-law has a program that can do the work - I just need to get all of the video files transferred to him (thank goodness for fast broadband)
