William and Mary Sutherland and family

I am looking for any information on the ancestors of William Sutherland and Mary Sutherland (b 1873) of Edinburgh, and any information on their family.  William and Mary were my great grandparents.

I have this photograph, which would date from approx 1915...



Their children were, l-r,

Christine
Maisie, b 1901 (m Lindsay)
Margaret, b 1903 (m Kidd)
Ethel (m Christie)
Stuart
Edith (m Robertson)

If I were you I would go to www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk, register and buy a few credits.

Then look up the family in the 1911 census. I think they are in Edinburgh St George, Enumeration District 10, Page 12: William Stuart Sutherland, 41; Mary, 37; Mary, 8; Maggie, 7; Edith, 5 and Ethel, 3. This will tell you where the members of the family were born.

If all the children were born in Edinburgh, you should then look up the birth of Ethel in 1907 or Edith in 1906. Either birth certificate will tell you Mary's maiden surname and the date and place of her marriage to William.

Then look up the marriage certificate and it will tell you the full names of the couple's parents including their mothers' maiden surnames.

Then come back here and tell us what you have found and we will suggest the next step for you.

Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Thanks.  I will give that a try.  I am new to all this - sudden lockdown pastime!  I've managed to unravel 6 of the 8 great grandparent lines, some back to the 1400s, but this pair are a brick wall!  :)

William married Mary Bagshaw, 1898, St. George, Edinburgh

William born 1869, St Andrew, Edinburgh

Mary Ann born 1873, St George, Edinburgh

Mary Sutherland 27 b. Edinburgh
