Edmund Victor Dobson imprisonment help needed please
« on: Tuesday 28 April 20 10:18 BST (UK) »
Hi all

Can anyone please point me towards some information regarding this matter?
It would seem that my great uncle EDMUND VICTOR DOBSON was imprisoned some time during the early 1960s.
I have no idea why this might be although I am led to believe that it was for two years less one day.

Here's what I know...

Edmund Victor Dobson
  • Born Scarborough, North Yorkshire, 18 June 1897
  • Married Rebe Florence Bradley, Scarborough, 25 November 1922
  • Fathered Michael John Dobson, Scarborough, 22 August 1923
  • Emigrated - alone! - to Canada early 1928, arriving at Halifax, Nova Scotia on 10 March 1928, to work for the Hudson Bay Company
  • Married - bigamously! - Gertrude Frances Olshewski, Kamsack, Saskatchewan, 25 May 1942
  • Rose to the rank of Captain in the Fort Garry Horse Regiment (1940s)
  • Almost two years prison sentence (early 1960s?)
  • Died 10 June 1966, Kamsack, Sask.
  • Buried in Riverview Cemetery, Kamsack (link HERE)
I have no idea as to why he was imprisoned, but there are three distinct possibilities...
i) Someone found out about his past, was about to expose him and he did something silly about it;
ii) someone did find out and reported it and he was sent down for it
iii) he was in trouble financially

The final option there would tie in with his time in the UK where he was a bit of a wrong 'un and was in trouble with The Law for petty theft before he fled the country.

Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

MT ;)

2 years less a day is a provincial not federal sentence.
He married in Kamsack and died there in the 1960s - you might assume his transgression occurred there.  Have you tried contacting the library in Kamsack - they might have old newspapers available for searching.
I would question your premise that his jail time was in anyway connected to his leaving a wife behind in England.  There could be many reasons why a person could end up in jail.

I merely suggested that this might be a reason - I really don't know.
Anyway, I'll try to contact Kamsack Library and see what, if anything, they can tell me.
Thanks for your response.
