Help with Italian Birth Reg. for Foundling Infant
« on: Saturday 02 May 20 14:43 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Would love some help interpreting this document--namely curious to know the condition of the child (Maria De Curtis), if there were any tokens left with her, at which church she was left, and if there are any clues as to parentage, guardians, or wet nurses.

Any help would be appreciated! Thanks.

Unfortunately, the file is too large to upload here, but here's the link in Ancestry: https://www.ancestry.com/interactive/9979/MM9.3.1_2FTH-266-11566-136380-69?pid=225549&backurl=http://search.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/sse.dll?indiv%3D1%26dbid%3D9979%26h%3D225549%26tid%3D%26pid%3D%26usePUB%3Dtrue%26_phsrc%3DDPV481%26_phstart%3DsuccessSource&treeid=&personid=&usePUB=true&_phsrc=DPV481&_phstart=successSource&usePUBJs=true&_ga=2.19961080.1515355051.1587774348-197305775.1584405794&_gac=1.47726293.1588358347.Cj0KCQjwka_1BRCPARIsAMlUmEoojPs65pehgIUIzpcx6_vvfNLVZ4DK6mBWx6P61UnjuBtxaUXbM6kaAnBgEALw_wcB

Year 1856, March 30,  ….appeared before me Petronilla Manzo, daughter of the late
Gaetano, aged 41, of profession blessed/pious? receiver (could be a nun)…..who presented
a baby girl, and declared that she was born about a day ago and was put in the wheel
for the abandoned situated as above (Castellammare) dressed in torn clothing, and
without any marks; on the 29th of the above month, at 1:00 o’clock at night in the
house of said wheel.  The same (receiver) has also declared to have given the baby
the name Maria Giuseppa de Curtis.

The next certificate is easier to read , Petronilla is "domiciliata in delle comune strada Duomo" , her profession is  "Piaricevitrice" : the person who received the abandonned children in the wheel.

Thank you for the replies.

So then the strada Duomo is referring to the home of Petronilla, and not where the wheel was located?
Does it give any indication (address or description of building) where the baby was found or perhaps baptized?
I know the information is scant, as was the case with a lot of the foundling records.

I read somewhere that for foundlings, there was possibly also a "second part" to their birth registration, which elaborated a bit more on the infant's condition, where he/she may have been placed, etc. Is anyone familiar with that, or where I might find those records?

Thank you again.
