Patrick Welton, Waterford, Ireland born about 1821, married Ellen

I have just found another old post in Rootschat relating to the marriage of Patrick Welton and Ellen Connolly in Lislee. It appears that Ellen's mother's maiden name might have been Ellen Donovan which seems to tie up with a couple of comments above about the 1861 census. Am I right in my understanding that the 1861 census, as well as Patrick and Ellen and the children Catherine, Ellen, William, Mary Ann & Patrick also contains "Ellen Donovan - mother"? To me, this would be another detail that might tie the Patrick Welton that I have to the marriage in Cork.

Here is 1861 transcribed for Family Search. As you can see the transcription is poor.
Ellen Downen - mother. The census page does read as Donovan.

There is a difficulty though, that if she were Ellen Connolly’s mother, she would be remarried and if she were Patrick’s mother, she would also be remarried.

Here is that baptism you refer to. Look just above ‘March’ on the page.
It is interesting that there are Wheltons mentioned on that page too but perhaps all Cork surnames.

Hmmm yes. I guess it's hard not to jump to conclusions when you find a record that seems to fit! It looks as the names are all too common to be able to decide which is the right one. The baptism record you have pointed out is certainly a better fit by area.

The post I was looking at was the one you mentioned, put up by Keith Welton - he seems to have put up several posts over the years. It would appear that he is related to Michael Christopher Welton which is the same line that I am following.

And no wonder I have never been able to find the 1861 census record! "Walter" didn't come into my list of possible variations of "Welton."
