He joined up at Wells, maybe you need to be looking at the St James parishes nearest there assuming he may have walked from home.

It may be worth considering Taunton, which is the county town of Somerset (I think) and has a St. James.

Cameley is closest to Wells - 10 or 11 miles.
Then Winscombe - 12.5 miles.

There was a railway line, "The Strawberry Line", that ran through Winscombe and Cheddar to Wells.
