Thankyou Sinaan et al for your help including the posts I have opened this morning. It is my first l the Irish connection. I am not only interested in trying to find where the Faulkner family originated from but also the Social situation that encouraged them to up sticks and move to England. It seems Liverpool would be the main port through which people came, where were the exit ports from Ireland to Liverpool? Is there a site where I can obtain a synopsis of what was going on in Ireland around the mid 19th Century? Regards, Robin.

Where do I begin! Patrick Faulkner and wife Mary emigrated to UK from Ireland prior to their first childs birth

Ireland was a part of the UK until 1922 ;D

As this was an internal (within the UK) migration, no passenger records will exist.

I gathered together whats has been been offered and tried census substitutes A and B
A
1823-1837 Tithe Applotment books
http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/search/tab/home.jsp
disappointing
0  Faulkner in Co Mayo
52 Falkner in Ireland but none listed in Co Mayo
B
1857 Griffiths Valuation Co Mayo approx. ~1857 see http://www.askaboutireland.ie/griffith-valuation/
1857 Faulkner Edmond  High Street Ballinrobe Mayo see Knockanotish High St map ref 3.13
Faulkner    Michael    Cloonmore, Upper   Kilcolman   Mayo
Faulkner    Matthew Cloonmore, Upper   Kilcolman   Mayo
I felt I wasn’t getting anywhere

The most important source should https://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/district registration offices in Mayo needed for searching : Ballina, Ballinrobe, Belmullet, Castlebar, Castlereagh, Claremorris, Killala, Newport (included in Westport after 1886), Swineford, Westport. I just tried Patrick in Ballinrobe without success I have run out of time

sorry that’s all I can offer

I came back and rethought and searched the 1871 census for Patrick in case he came as a teenager to England. I believe I Iound him so although its unproven and just  speculation I ask you to consider its merits
so my gathering isnow a draft speculative tree
F1 an unknown Faulkner b Ireland m unknown
children
..F1.1. Michael Faulkner b~ Ireland [could be the Michael in 1857 Cloonmore, Upper Kilcolman Mayo]  m Bridget King b~ Ireland dau of Mary King b 1805 ireland source 1871c
....children
F1.1.1. Patrick Faulkner b~1856-8  Co Mayo a coalminer in 1881 Wood st Golborne, Lancashire, a stone quarryman in 1891 a quarry labourer in 1901m Jun1875  Stoke on Trent   6b   334  Mary Reynolds b~1858   Dublin a mill hand in 1891, a Woolcombing Machine Minder in 1901 possible birth/baptism 6 May 1856 DUBLIN (RC) , Parish/Church/Congregation - ST. CATHERINE dau of William Reynolds and El? McEvoy
if she had a further 1st name the other possible exist see https://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/   [ older sister of Ellen Reynolds bb~1860 m St John, Preston, Lancashire William Blundell child Michael b~1887 preston. however her details read b 6 Aug 1858 dau of John Reynolds and Mary Henderson at St Nicholas Dublin RCso one or other is wrong
Patrick or Mary is related to a sibling or the spouse of sibling as a 20 yr old neice Maggy Baxter appears in 1891 censusone or other is related to
residences
emigrated to UK from Ireland prior to
......children
......F1.1.1.1. Thomas Faulkner b~ Sep  qtr 1878 Wigan. Went Awol in the 1891 Census but was noted as a member of the Royal Warwick's Fusiliers at the Colchester Garrison in 1901
there are 5 Patrick Faulkner listed in1914-1919 war medals https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_fn=patrick&_ln=faulkner&_no=&_crp=&_ttl=&discoveryCustomSearch=true&_cr1=WO+372&_dt=M&_col=200&_hb=tna
......F1.1.1.2. Mary Ellen Faulkner b~1879 Golborne Lancashire see 1891c  a mill hand in 1891
......F1.1.1.3. James Faulkner b Bradford Sept qter 1882
F1.1.2.  Mary Faulkner b 1859 Ireland
F1.1.3.  Catherine Faulkner b 1862  Ireland
F1.1.4.  Delia Faulkner b 1867 Ireland
F1.1.5.  Maria Faulkner b 1869 Cheshire
I think the family  migrated to England in 1868 so what was happening in Co Mayo just before. the proof might exist in the continuation valuation books that cover 1868 and before
now i discover the further support to your query pouring in.
Please add if you think the treeuseful  good luck on your history background
