"Enumerator came from a 'Home for the Bewildered' in 1851!"

Many thanks to you all.
I had to pop out for a late night supermarket shop but I will return to these two separate families in the morning when I am less bewildered myself.

Pauline, you made a very good find with the 1841 family.  I have just sent Ancestry Surname corrections for the whole family.

Hi,

I think this could be the 1841 census for the GROUNDSELL family that are living in Gatcombe in 1851,

1841  HO107/407/2  f.35  p.21 Newport, Isle of Wight
Pyle Street

GRUNSELL
Charles    35    Ag L
Jane        30
Charles     6
Emma       4
Ellen         2

All born in County

Marriage
13 Oct 1825  Carisbrooke
Charles GRUNSELL
Jane JAMES

Births found on GRO site,

Ellen GROUNDSELL    Dec Q 1839    Isle of Wight    08  206
mmn:  James

Sarah Ann GROUNSELL    Jun Q 1842    Isle of Wight    08  216
mmn:  IMNES

Henry GROUNDSELL    Dec Q 1843    Isle of Wight    08  227
mmn:  JAMES

These would fit with the 1851 family but I can't find any sign of Fanny's birth.

Fanny is here in 1861, another odd census record, handwritten form, address Unknown Barracks!

1861  RG9/655  f.173  p.47
Unknown Barracks

Fanny GROUNSELL    Servant    14    House Servant    Hants, Carisbrooke

In the household of Fredk ROLFE, 33,  Officer's Messman,  London

It is showing at Ancestry as the Parish of Wootton but FindMyPast says Carisbrooke, the NA shows that RG9/656 is the Parish of Wootton,

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C3098691

and RG9/655 to be the Parish of Newport, Parkhurst Forest

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C3098690

So I think she could be at Parkhurst in Albany Barracks.

Regards,
Daisy

Daisypetal -- your find really puts the cat amongst the pigeons! I have to confess to being completely baffled with these IOW families at the moment.

It's even difficult searching the GRO Index as we don't know how the surname may be transcribed - and I don't seem to be able to find all these children on that register, even when I search phonetically or similar!

I so hate it when I am completely stumped and cannot help. So sorry.

Thank you Pauline -- that's useful to know. I didn't know about that website and will hopefully 'store it away' for future reference.
