help please with Birth Certificate 1846 Chapeltown
« on: Thursday 07 May 20 19:56 BST (UK) »
Hi,
Please can anyone help. I've got a Birth Certificate for my Ancestor in 1846 in Chapeltown, but I cannot understand part of it. Please, is there anyone with local knowledge who could shed some light on this?
It's re the Column that states: When and Where Born. It says Thirteenth September 1846, and then
5. PM  or possibly 5. Pill  Chapeltown. It's the 5. PM  or possibly 5. Pill that I don't understand. Is this an abode, or is it that she was born at 5 pm?
I'd appreciate any help,
Thanks,
Kit

The time always says AM or PM so I think it is safe to say it is the time rather than an abode.

Thanks for your reply Crumblie - I've puzzled over this for a while - it's just that I've never seen a Birth Certificate before stating the time of birth, (especially back in this era), whereas I have seen "Pill" as an abode.
(I've tried to attach a copy of the certificate, but can't find a way of doing this; I presume that it would be against copyright anyway).

In the early years of civil registration in England, you do occasionally see a time of birth given, even though it's not required, and not twins.
Researching among others:
Bartle, Bilton, Bingley, Campbell, Craven, Emmott, Harcourt, Hirst, Kellet(t), Kennedy,
Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

Hi Medpat and arthurk,
Thanks for your replies. I really don't think it states Pilley, as there is no "ey" after 5. PM or 5. Pill and it then states that she was born in Chapeltown. I just wondered, if it was an abode, that someone with  local knowledge might recognize it. The other alternative is that it's got to be the time!
Thanks very much,
Kit

You can't add attachments to any RootsChat board that ends with ". . . . Lookup Requests".
In any case, RootsChat guidelines are that you attach a snippet of the certificate, and not the whole thing.

Definitely agree with this. In my experience it's not that unusual in the 1840s. I've seen quite a number of them.
