Austria - marriage
« on: Thursday 07 May 20 21:43 BST (UK) »
Hello everyone,

I am hoping to find the record of a marriage that I think took place in Austria sometime between 1901 and 1939 but I don't know exactly where. I have looked on the metricula site but in order to search that you really need to have an idea of the location / parish where the wedding took place.  I wondered if anyone had any ideas about other sources that might be worth checking. Nothing is coming up on Ancestry.

The bride's name was Bernheardnia Harsley and the groom's surname was Kregeloh (or a variation), but his first name is unknown. The bride was born in England originally.

Any suggestions gratefully received!

Hi

I looked at the Austrian newspapers online and found out that the marriage took place in Graz, Steiermark between March 25 and April 25 1908. The marriage took place in the Grazer Evangelische Gemeinde, so I think you won't find it at matricula. (Grazer Tagblatt, May 6 1908, page 12)

There is also the baptism of a son Hubert Otto William, between January 25 and february 25 1909, also in the Grazer Evangelische Gemeinde (Grazer Tagblatt, March 3 1908, page 14).

Hi Svenja,

Thank you so much, that is amazing! I had no idea that Bernhardine had ever had a child. I will certainly look for the marriage record as well and see if there is any further detail.

I know that in 1939 Bernhearnia (or Bernhardine) was living back in England with her sister and that her husband was not with her. Now that I know her husbands name I hope to be able to find some further information about him and their child.

Thank you again
Vicky

Because Bernheardnia had married an Austrian, under law at the time she had lost her British citizenship. Therefore technically she was an "enemy alien"

However, as you will see from the attached from the old Moving Here archive, she was exempted from internment on two grounds: being British born, and being anti-nazi :)

Post-war, she naturalised (re-admission was the category for women who were British-born and

Hi Jorose, thank you for that information!

The records in relation to Bernheardnia I had seen, but you've picked up on something I'd completely overlooked; that Hubert gave the Hull address as being his father's address too in 1940. I hadn't been able to find any indication at all that Rudolf had ever gone to England.

Although to be honest I do wonder whether it might have been a lie on Hubert's part, to avoid any uncomfortable questions about his heritage. It would seem from other things I've since found that he described his father variously as either Belgian or Austrian; certainly he lived in Austria but I have found a possible baptism which, if it was the right one, would make him German, something which Hubert might have wanted to disguise to enable him to travel as widely as he clearly did. I also kind find a death record for Ruldof in England.

It's fascinating that Hubert did travel so much - I've seen a suggestion that he studied or worked in the field of languages so that is possibly why but I wouldn't be surprised if there was more to the story either.

Thanks again 🙂
