Hugh and Jane(Polly) Dey
« on: Sunday 10 May 20 10:52 BST (UK) »
Can anyone identify approx. date of this photograph and identify what the lady is wearing.  Hugh was in farming around Auchindoir, Aberdeenshire.
Many thanks.

Is it an early version of a Nurse's watch.  Even in the 1960s when my wife was training to be a Midwife they all had upside down watches for ease of reading the 20 seconds timepoint for calculating the pulse ( n X 3 for beats per minute)
Norfolk, Nelsons of Gt Ryburgh, Gooch, Howman, COLLISONS,  Ainger, Couzens, Batrick (Norfolk & Dorset), Tubby ( also of Yorkshire) Cathcarts of Ireland, Lancashire & Isle of Wight) Dickinsons of Morecambe and Lancaster, Wilson of Poulton-le-Sands and Broughton.  Wilson - Ffrance of Rawcliffe,  Mitchells of Isle of Wight. Hair of Ayrshire, Williamson of Tradeston, Glasgow. Nelsons in Australia with Haywards Heath connections.

I did notice the watchmyself.  I don't think this couple were married in the 1901 census.  He was in farming.

Thank you

It looks Edwardian (1901-1910)

I see that they married in Auchindoir in 1875.

PS Jane Simpson was the name given on SP

Thank you for that.  I think that may be Hugh's parents.  Hugh and Jane(Polly) were a couple who brought up my great aunt's illegitimate son Albert Reid, born 1918, when his mother died in 1920 when members of the family did not offer to do so. So I think that couple who married in 1875 were a bit old for bringing him up.

They are the only Hugh Dey and Jane marrying in Aberdeenshire,  Do you think that Jane might have had had another name or they married outwith the area?

You say that they were married in 1901*. Where were they living and what were there ages? It could help with a broader search.

* sorry - I mis-read. I though you said that they were married in 1901 :-[

I've done a wide search for a marriage of Hugh Dey 1901 to 1920, Scotland

Five marriages came up - none to a Jane

1905, Margaret Lund Leith South
1906 Elizabeth Maggie McLean Auchindoir ditto with surnames Milne and Rennie
1906  Isabella Simpson, St Machar

I apologise if I have  misled you. I should have said I am sure they were not married in the 1901 census as Hugh born 1879 is working as a farm worker in Premnay.
I have no access to the 1911 census so they were probably married by then.
I was rather curious about the approx. date of the photograph and if the lady, who appears to be wearing a nurses watch, may have actually been a nurse.  It is a lovely photograph.

Thanks
